i'm jericka duncan.hanks for joining us on this sunday. all eyes are on rome tonight, as the world's catholics pray for pope francis. the 88-year-old remains in critical condition suffering from pneumonia in both lungs, the vatican describing his condition as, quote, complex. today the faithful gathered at masses to pray for the pope, including at new york's saint patrick's cathedral and in the city of his birth. the pontiff has been in the hospital since february 14th. cbs' seth doane is at the vatican. >> reporter: pope francis remains in critical condition tonight, and blood tests are revealing early signs of kidney failure. we've learned that the pope is also receiving high flow oxygen through tubes in his nose, and he is continuing to get trbladd tr -- blood transfusions. the vatican says he has not had another respiratory crisis since saturday. his doctors have underscored he is a fragile patient and this is not an easy case to treat. i asked one of his doctors how many different drugs he's on, and

jericka, what happens if this dr. outside of new york and then gets pulled over or something? >> reporter: that's the thing here. governor hochul said that she cannot protect dr. carpenter if she leaves the state. so this is a situation where the governor says as long as she is here, she has my support, but if she steps outside, she very well could find herself in a situation where she has to go answer those charges in louisiana. >> maurice: so then where does the case go from here? >> reporter: so, because this is uncharted territory, and we are talking about a case with these two contradictory laws, it could go before the supreme court. as you heard in the report, governor hochul saying she is willing to take on that fight. also, clayton, the prosecutor there in louisiana saying the same thing. but this is what some people did expect with the overturning of roe v. wade, when you have so many states operating under different laws and different jurisdictions. >> john: jericka duncan. thank you, jericka. >> maurice: st

jericka duncan talked with the prosecutor in that case. >> we are prosecuting the doctor because shed louisiana laws for aiding and abetting and committing an abortion. bottom-line is "come answer the warrant." >> reporter: tony clayton is the district attorney in louisiana who filed criminal charges against new york doctor margaret carpenter. >> if the abortion crime were a tailor-made suit, it would custom-fit the actions of dr. carpenter. >> reporter: how much time is she facing? what's the penalty? >> that's up to the judge. so, it ranges from 5 to 15. it depends on what -- >> reporter: 5 to 15 years behind bars? >> yes. >> reporter: the doctor sent pregnancy-ending medication to the mother of a 17-year-old in louisiana. the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol are illegal in the state, with few exceptions. clayton alleges the mother forced her pregnant daughter to take the medication. he now wants the doctor to face a jury. >> if you're innocent, dr. carpenter, then these 12 people down here will tell you you're innocent. if you're guilty, they're going to tell you you're guilty.

cbs's jericka duncan says it has sparked outrage and calls for justice. >> reporter: one by one fiveorrections officers entered the courtroom handcuffed thursday. >> not guilty. >> reporter: and pleaded not guilty to charges of second degree murder and manslaughter. the men are accused of attacking robert brooks, some kicking and punching him while he was restrained on a medical exam table at marcy correctional facility last december. brooks's son, robert brooks jr., spoke after the arraignment. >> i will never get my father back. the men have robbed me of that opportunity. still, indictments are an important step towards accountability. >> reporter: three other former corrections officers were charged with manslaughter for failing to stop the attack. they also pleaded not guilty. aaccording to the unsealed indictment, another person was charged with tampering with physical evidence for allegedly trying to remove blood stains in the area where the fatal beating took place. >> robert died of massive beating to his body both externally and internally. he also died as a result of repeat
