one interesting thing, we have a new governor, jerry brown. it's going to be interesting to see, does he have a different approach on parole? >> the former attorney general. >> former attorney general. you know, he's going to have 6 of the 12 parole board appointments to make in the coming seven months. so it will be interesting to see if he puts people on there who have a different attitude about rehabilitation and parole, or if he does what his predecessors have always done. >> he has proposed a pretty significant shift in prison population to the local level, which, you know, maybe will come with enough money to pay for it. probably not. does this affect that in any way? >> well, the supreme court decision doesn't. you know, in terms of the county jails, the local officials are saying hey, we're overcrowded, too. so we really don't have room for these folks. but, you know, one other -- this is another issue, of course. but related, you know, jerry brown's also going to have an appointment to the state supreme court. carlos moreno announcing

and how did jerry talk to you into it? >> i've known jerry from 1959. he replaced me in denver when i got transferred to the white house. he called me one day and asked me if i'd be willing to contribute to a book he was writing. he told me what it was going to be about. i was not enthusiastic at all. i was very apprehensive about it. i've been offered many chances to write, contribute, appear on television, various things. i just didn't want to do it. he told me that this book was going to be factual, no gossip, the information would be coming from the agents that were involved and material that they had. and then he said that i could check it for fact. once he said that, then i agreed to contribute. as long as i could check it before it was published, which i did. and i've read the book six times. and i know what's in it, and it's factual, not fiction. >> you mention salacious material. the talk about his personal life. there's a lot of that in your book. why is that? >> well, they -- we in the secret service give the president and his family as much

so if at all possible, i mean, jerry brown may be better liked than his predecessor. think at this point republicans are actually giving him the benefit of the doubt. even in statements coming out after the announcement on tuesday there was -- or monday there was this real sense of they're at least giving him a shot, that they'll give it a fair hearing. and even on the issue of taxes, i mean, the republicans, let's be very clear, do not want new taxes in the state. they will probably fight even this proposal or put it on the ballot. but i think this sense of it really being the bottom of the barrel, this really being make it or break it kind of time is going to carry some weight. and i think as much as the republicans may not like taxes, they also understand that voters understand the enormity of this crisis. >> belva: well-k the governor put it on the ballot without republicans? >> no. he needs a few votes there. but even in signs from the republican caucus it looked as if there was enough wiggle room there, that jerry's made a very overt effort right from the get-go

i agree entirely with jerry. i agree with your focus in the blank case -- blake case. although we try to get the interview and tried to distract you in the cause, you are right to focus on the case. in the end, we had a conversation after verdict. in the end, it is important to be concerned about the image, not during the case, but in general, of public defender offices and criminal defense attorneys. i think it is also important to make a distinction. while i agree an effort should be made to show the difference between criminal attorneys and public defenders for this reason. when we would ask people about this distinction -- first of all, people can recite law-and- order language in the criminal justice system -- and they can recite that but not the sixth amendment. they also cannot tell you the difference between public defenders and criminal defense attorneys. when we would tell them about public defenders, they but say, oh, i get that. and whatever they describe their political affiliation to be, they liked the idea. they supported it. they wanted their tax dollar
