with jay allison, jerry allison, who played drums with joe mauldin, who played the standup bass.n they were starting out and getting these gigs at different places, they were also able to open for different musical acts that would come through town. elvis presley being one of them. and for other performers that came through town, like early husky and johnny cash and bill haley and the comets. it was during one of those appearances that he was seen by a nashville talent scout, who happens to also be marty robbins' manager, a man by the name of eddie crandall. and after that performance, mr. crandall spoke with buddy's manager, a gentleman by the name of "high pockets" duncan. he told mr. duncan that he thought he would be able to get buddy a recording contract in nashville. so it was through those channels that buddy was able to receive his first recording contract out of nashville. he and his band went up to nashville with the idea that they would record songs as they wanted them recorded, however, when he got to nashville, they sort of -- the executives there wanted him to play
