i heard the governor jerry brown in sell say the other day that if the legislature won't agree to something, it goes to the people. the people can create a referendum and decide that way. it is truly taking the government or the governing of that state to the people. how does that fit in to the larger picture? >> i think this kind of direct democracy is probably a little dangerous. i represent the system that worked very well, but there increasing uses of this kind of thing that came out of the progressive era which was a period in which politics seemed to be dead. i think it's similar to our own time that the inequalities of wealth were enormous and a lot of reforms were passed that led to the use of the ballot initiativ initiatives. we don't really want to go down that path. i know colorado is suffering from this. they are all over the place. they are having referendums to repeal previous referendums and it comes a very dangerous situation. there is the possibility technically within the half century or shorter where we as a people could vote on the budget. you could see every april 15th,

the first year i did this breakfast, it was willie brown in your seat, jerry brown in your seat, and we had questions about the difficulty of buildings for the stadium in order to retain teams. it feels like groundhog day. how many years on, we are still there. you seem to be in the hot seat. you have three professional sports teams, all of whom could go elsewhere. i know you just approved a $3 million grant from a redevelopment fund to look at the coliseum. is there a reasonable amount of money within oakland's ability to spend that would guarantee these teams remain here? or do you have to be open to the possibility one or more of them could leave? >> our goal is to keep all three of them. that is one thing i do not want to share with ed, is my sports teams. we will clearly be dealing, i think, with some announcements of around coliseum city. i think we have to wait to see how redevelopment shakes out, to look at some of the other options. i am feeling generally optimistic. the family joke is if i was not so optimistic i would not be mayor. i am optimistic about the teams. we are i

harris has come up as somebody -- and jerry brown was also the governor of the state of california, he was the attorney general and they have at times in the history when they were personally against the death penalty. when they ran for attorney general they both said that they would not interfere with the state law, and they would allow the death penalty to be carried out on their watch. this is correct? in fairness, i will say that there were a lot of law enforcement officials the route the state of california that had severe reservations about supporting harris for attorney general because of the opposition to the death penalty in san francisco. but george defended her and actually supported her candidacy, and this was an important component of getting support from law enforcement for her. let me ask you this. when we spoke yesterday, as i heard his story i asked him, how did you survive death row? the mechanics of this. i asked about how much time in the yard that he got. i wonder if you could share with members of -- in the auditorium where your daily life was like on death row. >

jerry brown is not coming in offering more money. he is doing the opposite thing. he has to. washington, d.c., guess what? they are not going to give us a whole pot of money. we have to innovate our way to solutions in our city. i cannot think of a better way. if someone tells me they do not have enough money to do something and that i've got a period of time to do it, i'm going to look around for the best minds and the best friends and people who love the city most and say, let's work together to find solutions. how do we pay for those cuts for the aids programs scott has referred to, or supervisor campos has talked to me about community-based services that need to be here in the community, not in some centralized place where you cannot get it. how do we do all of that and still maintain the balance? that is up to us to find that way. you have a mayor that is seriously focused on your problems, because there are problems. it's not my budget. it's our budget. i will spend every day and hour i can to find the best solutions that i can. i have some really keen brains here. they
