lee? >>> what's at stake for the nation and president obama. >>> disappearing act. jerry lewis' departing from the mda telethon this weekend. welcome to "msnbc sunday," i'm alex witt. let's get out there. the president will be in paterson, new jersey, today, one of the many east coast towns struggling to recover. governor chris christie will join the president. >> reporter: when president obama arches in a short while, he'll get first-hand look at the damage caused by hurricane irene. he'll be joined by chris christie and craig fugate and state and local officials. you can see the passaic river behind me, receding a bit. but this community is still hurting, still trying to rebuild. when irene first hit, as many as 1,500 people have had to be evacuated from their homes. hundreds of thousands of people lost power, homes destroyed, cities destroyed. some city blocks were completely submerged. this is a working class community that was really hurting economically before irene hit, so the folks here are really struggling now. president obama has declared new jersey a state of

jerry brown and the state attorney general have chosen to stay on the sidelines. once this is decided, the case will head back to the federal courts. >>> tropical storm lee is moving north from the gulf states, leaving behind flooding from rain and damage from tornados. >> reporter: the remnants of lee causing flooding in new orleans and partially fueling wildfires in texas. the system dumping more than a foot of rain on the crescent city and spawning tornados in alabama and mississippi. the mayor of new orleans says breaks in the extreme weather have been helping first responders keep damage to a minimum, but the nasty weather not keeping visitors away. tourism officials say numbers are on par with labor day weekend last year. >> yeah, the storm did cause some cancellations but nothing to cry over. i think the city was relatively in good shake this weekend. as far as new orleans was concerned, it was mainly a rain event. >> reporter: meantime, in texas, wildfires spreading quickly, partly due to the tail end of lee. they're burning thousands of acres and have forced hundreds to evacuate their homes. in an area already suffering drought conditions and a summer of
