it's produced by jerry weintraub. good friend of the president for over 40 years. jerry, it's -- i watched it this morning. it is a fascinating documentary because you just can't imagine, there are so many things about this man that you don't know. and as i was watching, i was like i didn't know that happened to him. i didn't know about this. i see all sorts of stuff. pictures, images, revelations from his own mouth which are really startling. >> but you know why you don't know? most people don't know all about it. is because he never bragged about himself and he never felt that he was going to be an imperial president, that he was designated to be president of the united states. he was doing a job. and he never -- his mother and father early on, as you saw in the film, told him don't brag about yourself, don't talk about yourself, don't be a big shot. just go ahead and run your life, do your life. and that's what he did. and even in the best of days and in the worst he didn't sit around in the living room and say look what i just did, look what i just accomplished.

. >> joining me now is the executive producer of the movie, jerry weintraub.e to have you with us today. tell us what motivated you. why did you want to do this movie and how did you get the access? >> thanks, andrea. he and i have been friends close to 50 years. i have a home up in kennebunkport and a young fellow by the name of jeff roth contacted the president. he had done a film on astronauts. the president saw it. liked it. invited him up to kennebunkport and the president called me and then the access happen and we got going, and got it done. as you know, he doesn't like to talk about himself. so it was not easy. >> i was going to say. it's not easy to draw him out, because that's, the lessons he drew from his mother. that yankee spirit from connecticut, of course, is not to talk about yourself. not to brag. in fact, some people suggested it was one of problems he in 1992 going up against bill clinton. not bragging about his record. tell us about kennebunkport and what that house, that home really means to them? what that house means to the bush family?

i talked to the producer jerry weintraub about what it reveals, like president bush's comedic side. >t want people to be amicable or funny he was while a sitting president? >> no, he was amicable and a lot of fun. he had a big job. remember, people forget this or maybe some don't know it, he was shot down in the world war ii, and he was in a little fighter plane. he was a young man, and he got shot down, and he should have been dead. luckily, a submarine came along and picked him up and rescued him. so he was very serious about his job as president of the united states. it wasn't cavalier, and when he sent the kids to war, he knew what it was, because he went, himself, and he almost died. so he was a serious man, very, very serious man. there was a great -- and he has a great sense of humor, and he can't punt very well, but other than that, he was a very serious gu guy. >> and the bush legacy, was it his intention to groom his sons to become governors and the president? >> no, i don't think so. i have never had that discussion with him. but i don't belief he groomed them to be anythin

gentleman you're going to be writing a biography about him and you got to see -- >> hbo did -- >> jerry weintraub film. it was -- they did -- hbo did a nice event at saint ann's church where george herbert walker bush's parents were married and the family -- >> gorgeous. >> family church and then had a lovely party and it was -- it fulfilled sort of all your -- what your expectations would be. he was in -- the film is very good. it's all in '41's voice basically, and -- which is ineffable, it's hard to make that up, predicate sometimes happens, sometimes they don't. >> sometimes they don't. >> who needs them. he's a small government guy. and very gracious. the senior -- the 43rd president was there and much of the family and mrs. bush. it was lovely. and reminder of -- sort of, obviously, comes to mind when you look at president obama sort of retroactively still blaming the last eight years, obviously different parties, you didn't hear a lot of bush '41 blaming the deficits on the previous eight years. i think people want you to move forward. >> and it's fascinating where we find george h.w. bush
