only one of them got across the river just north of new jersey, just north of trenton, new jersey. and washington led that force into the storm attacking the hessians. the hessians had expected them to come. they had spies of their own. but then a small american force had attacked them in the day without orders. they thought that was the attack. and they led down their guard just for a moment and that's when the americans arrived. it was very carefully managed. the americans synchronized their watches. that's the first instance i can find of an army synchronizing the pocket watches that the officers carried and then they attacked trenton from both sides within about two minutes of each other and won a great victory. then the question was what to do with the victory. and he had a couple problems there. the hessians were not drunk. we have eyewitness accounts of their sobriety, but the american army discovered quite a lot of liquor in the ins of trenton and the american army got drunk. and washington had great difficulty getting his troops back again over the delaware river, more so

now, what happened in new jersey is that the legislature -- legislators in the state of new jersey took this principle of no taxation without representation seriously and took it to its furthest extremes. in 1776 the continental congress asked each state to write its own constitution. and when the state of new jersey was writing its first constitution, when it devised the provision regarding suffrage, it simply talked about suffrage in gender-neutral terms. it said that all inhabitants who are worth 50 pounds proclamation money are entitled to vote. now, this gender-neutral language is not in and of itself significant. if you look at the early state constitutions, more than half of them do not limit voting to men. what was different in new jersey was that in 1790 and 1797 state legislators clarified the meaning of this provision and they passed election statutes in which they referred to voters using the pronounce he and she. so new jersey actually extended the franchise to all adult members of society who met the property qualification for voting. and that meant free blacks as well as

[applause] >> and now taking a demotion to be governor of new jersey, if you don't think it is a demotion, you go ahead and lose grand jury subpoena power. i'm happy to be here this morning and talk to you about our experience in new jersey and i agree with the president that the most important thing that you can do as a governor for your economy is to try to institute pro-growth policies that grow the pot and that are optimistic, however, optimism was a thing that was a little difficult to find in january of 2010 in the state of new jersey, and here's why. in the eight years before i became governor, our state raised taxes and fees at the state level 115 times. in the decade before i became governor, new jersey had a zero -private-sector job growth a decade, a decade where we had zero job growth, but yet before i became governor, we became the state in america that had the most government workers per square mile in their state. that is an enormous achievement. christie also misstated new jersey's share of the project's costs and while mr.istie said at the time that the agreement with the federal government would have required the state to pay for any and all cost overruns in the project, the goa report says that the federal government was, in fact, offering to share those costs. so what was the problem? well, having nixed the big tunnel project, governor christie spent the money for it, spent the tunnel money on the state's transportation trust fund. which it just so happens was almost empty at time and which it just so happens is funded by a gasoline tax, which it just so happens chris christie made a campaign promise not to raise. so how do these dots connect? killing a giant state federal infrastructure project did a couple of things for chris christie. it helped make him a famous conservative republican guy. he's known as the guy who stood up to the feds and killed this expensive tunnel project. he's got his own bridge to nowhere, but he killed it. it also gave him an extra $4 billion to help him keep a campaign pr

[applause] >> thank you very much for those very kind words, and thank everyone for making today possible. this meeting could not be more timely, and even though i tried to do something in 2000, obviously did not work, which is why i am doing the introducing today. but it is a great honor, and we should recall that president bush's two tax cuts, particularly the big one in 2003. many people today do not remember that president bush inherited a faltering economy when he came into office. the economy was falling into recession in the aftermath of the dot-com bubble bursting, but for some reason he did not feel the need to remind us of it for eight years. president bush understood that taxes are a price and a burden, not just a means of raising revenue. that is a profound insight. when you lower the tax burden on people trying to do good things like productive work, you get more of those good things.
