[applause] [applause] let's review this new reality specifically, to remind our constituents and ourselves how far we have come and to resolve to never return to the old, dark days of our past in trenton. four years, four balanced budgets, no new taxes, new tax relief to create 75,000 new private sector jobs -- a far different picture from the prior eight years, which saw 115 increases in taxes and fees. it hasn't been easy, but we have done it together. and the people of new jersey are better off for it. the story is the same on property taxes, maybe even better. they had increased 70% in the prior 10 years -- the most in the nation. together, we enacted a 2% per year cap on growth and the interest arbitration reform that was needed to make that cap work. many said it wouldn't work, but the record tells a different story. last year, property taxes in new jersey grew by only 1.7% -- the lowest rise in two decades. and our pension system, which was on a path to insolvency, is now on mu

in screwed news new jersey governor chris christie might be very popular right now but he sure is not a friend of working people in the garden state. this week christie vetoed a bill passed out of the state senate that would have increased that state's minimum wage from seven twenty five an hour to eight fifty an hour currently the federal minimum wage is seven twenty five an hour and has been about rate since two thousand and nine but if it had kept up with inflation starting in one thousand nine hundred sixty eight the minimum wage right now would be over ten dollars and fifty cents an hour let me repeat that if the minimum wage today were to have the same purchasing power it had in one thousand nine hundred sixty eight that it would be well over ten dollars an hour instead of the seven dollars and twenty five cents an hour currently is and all the state in jersey's senate wanted to do is modestly raise that state's minimum wage to eight dollars and fifty cents an hour still well below the ten dollars plus where it needs to be for minimum wage workers to get by but governor christie

what does the governor of new jersey want to do in new jersey and what does he want the country to do? >> well in new jersey, first off, we have the second toughest gun laws in america already. >> is that enough? >> i think we have to have a conversation about it. but i think if all we talk about just controlling guns which we should talk about, we're not doing enough. you look at what happened in connecticut. that young man was obviously mentally ill and he needed to be getting treatment and i think there's such a stigma about mental illness and mental illness treatment in our country because we don't talk about it and if that young man had cancer his parents wouldn't have been reluctant to take him to the doctor to be treated. it's an illness just like anything else. we need to talk about substance abuse. woman in camden decapitated her infant child and killed herself high on crack. in new jersey what we've done is mandatory drug treatment, first time drug offenders we sentence to you one year of in-patient drug treatment facility that was my program last summer we signed in, and la

you guys worked together to take on unions in new jersey.s something the whole country knows about. sounds like you agree with a lot of what he has done in new jersey. >> listen, we had to get together. honestly, washington's dysfunctional and we can't put our people aside, so we fugt. the idea is to find areas of compromise and most of the stuff we did were things that i spoke about four or five years before the governor came into office and was ridiculed by my own party. we have to put the people first and that's what we did and we did search for areas of corp. miz and accomplished a great deal. we haven't found a solution to the economy. >> what do you think the future is for chris christie? he's getting a lot of conversation for 2016. chris christie versus hillary clinton. that could open the door for you. >> i know the governor has been lacking at the national stage for several years. he's done a good job of communicating. he's a person that has, he's got a good personality and you know, i'm not going to say bad things about him persona

our jersey shore was devastated with the loss of homes, public buildings, and iconic symbols of new jersey and economic vitality destroyed. our citizens answered 2013 unsure of their future. as they spent the holiday season displaced from all that was familiar and comforting. 31 days for andrew victims. 17 days for victims of gustav and ike. 10 days for victims much katrina, for the victims of sandy in new jersey, new york, connecticut, it has been 66 days and the wait continues. there is only one group to blame for the continued suffering of these innocent victims. the house majority and their speaker, john boehner. this is not a republican or democratic issue. national disasters happen in red states and blue states. in states with democratic governors and republican governors. we respond to innocent victims of natural disasters, not as republicans or democrats but as americans. or at least we did until last night. last night politics was placed before our oath to serve our citizens. for me, it was disappointing and disgusting to watch. on january 19th2010, i took an oath to serve all the
