jesse? guest: sorry? host: jesse, can you take anything from that? guest: it is a big problem that fannie mae and freddie mac are guaranteeing something like 70% of the mortgage market. i think there is wide consensus among democrats and republicans, the left and right, that this is a problem, that we do not want a government run mortgage system. but there is an argument for government guarantees of mortgages. it has abated since the great depression, and it is not a great distance from our banks to be in the mortgage business because it is extremely risky. in this country, mortgages are wonderful products to borrow, for the refinancing reason. when rates go down, you have the option to refinance. you get to put that expensive loan back to the bank and get a new loan at a better rate. that is a wonderful thing for you, and if rates go up, you hold onto your low rate loan at did not have to pay higher rates. all of the benefit is for the customer. what that makes it is a very risky loan for the bank, which argues for a kind of government involvement.
