nbc 10's jesse gary is live at scene this morning with an update from crews out there. jesse?a lot louder out here that's because the gas department is cutting into the street. they want to check their equipment and their system to make sure the broken water main did not affect their equipment. so that's what they're doing now in the foreground. in the background they're bringing in tow trucks to start removing some of those cars. one of them has the back end almost completely in the air. it's fallen down into the street. all the damage is apparent now that the water has receded. the water department says a cast iron water main broke around 4:30 this morning sending more than 12 million gallons of water into the streets. >> the transmission mains are sometimes more vulnerable to large volumes of water being used. so it could be different stresses on the main. >> the stresses led to a complete failure this morning. water shot from the ground into the air, rushed over parked cars on 52nd street. 14 residents were evacuated from their homes. some reporting ankle deep water in the

is from jesse matthew. taking a look at some video this morning of jesse matthew's family members walking in this morning. his father, mother, sister and girlfriend. during court today, the sister was overheard sighing and saying, i just want this over. the public defender made a motion to strike all three charges against jesse path through saying the commonwealth had not proved the attacker was him, that the entire case rested on a fingernail scraping. she said dogs were brought out to search for the attacker. nobody could be found. most notably jesse matthew because he wasn't there. the prosecutor countered. she said it's no credit to jesse matthew that the victim is alive today. it was nearly happennen stance that a man -- happenstance that a man named mark castro arrived and scared the attacker away. the defense is scheduled to be starting its case now. however, there's been a new development. we've seen jesse matthew's family go into a private room. the mother was crying. there is a lot of speculation

nbc 10's jesse gary is on scene. jesse, what can you tell us? >> reporter: tracey philadelphia police have opened the scene, opened up the 4100 block of north franklin street. so people can get their cars and head off to work. these detectives have been talking to the victim's relatives. those people tell me the victim is able to talk even though she was shot in the face and over at temple university hospital. that's good news for these detectives as they investigate this crime. let's take a look at the video, around 4:00 this morning, investigators say someone knocked on the victim's door, she opens the door she's shot in the face with a small caliber handgun. then the two shooters run off. >> >> have two suspects that are being sought two males. but we don't know where they went at this time. we done know how they fled the area. >> i just talked to these detectives a short time ago. they say they are working on a description, a composite of the two men that shot this woman in the face. i'm supposed to check back with them in another 20 minutes

testimony continued today in jesse matthew's trial which is in fairfax. he is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2005. northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg has been in the courtroom for the past two days and has details on who stock the -- took the stand today. jeff? jeff: the trial moving faster than the prosecutors anticipated. the d.n.a. evidence is the focus of the case. the prosecutors trying to link the d.n.a. evidence found on the victim to jesse matthew. at this moment, the d.n.a. expert for the prosecution is testifying that the d.n.a. found underneath the fingernail of the victim would come from only one specific source. earlier this morning we heard from members of the city of fairfax police department who investigated the case. the victim r.g. was in shock. blood from her nose and grass in her hair. the victim told the attacker "leave me don't kill me." we heard from mary lamb williams the nurse who performed the sexual assault examination on r.g. following the attack which happened on september 24 2005 in a wooded area near the

jess? >> reporter: that's right. has no idea who would want to open fire on her family while they were having a day celebration in west philadelphia last night. investigators say the shooting took place around 11:30. mccray tells me the family gathered to celebrate a birthday. they were standing on the corner of 41st and ogden streets. one minute they were enjoying food and music, the next they hear what sounds like fireworks. a second series of<2 t was scary. my children were out there. it was little kids. it was just -- it was ridiculous. there was nothing but blood all over the walkway, going up the steps. it was just ridiculous. >>> all of the children including the 18-month-old toddler are in stable condition at children's hospital of philadelphia. three more adult victims are still here inside penn presbyterian reported in stable condition as well. philadelphia southwest detectives have no idea on the shooter and no motive behind this crime. if you have information police would like to hear from you. jesse gary

jesse, you have learned this was a dangerous situation, especially because of the type of weapon that was used. >> that's right. a shotgun which sprays pellets out in this kind of general direction instead of a single bullet which can hit many more people. to that point, i talked to one of the relatives of one of the victims inside penn presbyterian. she tells me he is soon to be discharged from the hospital. they don't believe his wounds are life threatening. he is one of four adults being treated inside the hospital. we have learned that three of the four are in stable condition. one about to be discharged. and the one person we don't have an update on we're trying to get that for you. police detectives say the shooter opened fire at 11:30 last night at a block party at 41st and ogden street. they were celebrating a birthday they were all out in the party, out in the middle of the street having a good time. investigators say the suspect may have been at the gathering earlier, left and returned brought a shotgun, opened fire shoot nothing the crowd. that included children, two teens

jesse gary is live on one of those roads in west conshohocken. jesse?rter: ted, balligomingo road as the rain has returned and stopped for a short while and now it's back again. balligomingo balligomingo, we're about a half mile from the scene. we'll show you video. this is a mudslide that was caused by the rain overnight. that hillside has been cut down. because of that all that dirt is exposed. with the amount of rain we've had, that turned that dirt into mud. and it washed into one lane of the two-lane road. maybe four to six inches of mud. talked to west conshohocken police. they decided to close this down. they didn't want anybody driving through getting stuck or sliding and having an accident. the other road here in west conshohocken is route 23 which is a front. and that is shut down at bullock avenue all the way up to -- by the old inquirer newspaper facility. on swedeland road. that is shut down because of what you're seeing there. it's kind of standing water. not necessarily flooding but a lot of standing water from heavy rain. police said the

. >>> day two of the jesse matthew trial is in the books. yesterday we heard the rivetting testimony from the victim. today the prosecution was putting the evidence against matthew on display, our peggy fox live outside the fairfax county courthouse with more how that looked today. >> reporter: the dna expert who analyzed the scrapings from under the victim's fingernail testified today those scrapings the prosecution says match jesse matthew. however, the dna expert did not connect him to those scrapings. he did, however, say that the source is a single male source. we heard from a number of witnesses today including a nurse and several police officers who responded to and helped the victim that night. >> my attempt to talk with her was to find a spot that i could start the dog on to conduct a k- 9 track. >> reporter: jim graeves talked to the victim the night she was brutally attacked. he was a k-9 officer called to the scene. he testified that his dog hit hard on a scent in these woods. >> i could see that there was tracks in the dew in th

nbc 10's jesse gary is live at the starting and finish line with a look at the course. jesse? >> reporter: rosemary yeah we want to talk about what's going on right now. just within the past maybe 20 minutes or so you can see a little bit more activity as people come out and start to get things stet up and prepped for the beginning of the race at 8:00 this morning. but before that you should know, if you have a vehicle in this area and we're standing on manayunk avenue you want to come get your car. this is video we took a little while ago shows cars being towed from this area by the philadelphia police department. this is a 12.3 mile race course and if your vehicle is parked anywhere near here and there are signs clearly posted saying no parking. if you left your vehicle here overnight, you better come get it as fast as you can, because they are towing this morning. coming up in the next half hour we'll talk about the course itself and tacklk to a gentleman who tried the to make sure as he called it the freight train of cyclists keeps going and doesn't stop. we'll have that c

jesse you're live in west conshohocken. what are you seeing there? >> >> >> >>. >> reporter: a little bit of a problem here. some people had moved cones. the police have put the cones back in place. they say they're going to keep route 23 closed. let the show you why. this is video we shot a half mile from where we're standing. we were actually headed back eastbound. and this is the problem. this is the remnants of flooding from overnight. but police say they are worried when drivers pull through this area of high water, it's not necessarily flooding but it's going to create enough of a spray where it could be a problem that impacts traffic coming in the opposite direction. spraying water onto another motorist's windshield which could lead to an accident. for now police are going to keep route 23 at bullock avenue closed until that water dissipates and that would be a little while. you're going to have more rain later today. we also have some other flooding to show you. this is off the schuylkill expressway. this is the effects of rain through the ar

jesse gary is live at the scene on 52nd between westminster and wyalusing avenues. there's some new problems cropping up out there. tell us about it. >> reporter: that problem sits on top of a pgw gas line which is in the street under the street and that car, which is kind of with the back end in the air, that car is leaning on it. they want to get that car off the gas line as soon as possible to check and see if the gas line has been affected by a water main break earlier this morning. looking at our video from 4:30 this morning. that's when the first call came in of a 36 inch cast iron water main that ruptured. upwards of 12.5 million gallons of water was lost. it created flooding conditions washed over cars washed into basements, flooding basements. some residents told me it was ankle deep at some point in their basement. 14 people were being cared for initially. but i learned that the red cross shelter over at west philly high has been crossed. so the red cross is apparently no longer taking care those folks. we heard that mayor nutter will come out to the scene
