nbc's jesse kirsch has the details. >> reporter: following a violent car jjacking spree in and aroun the nation's capital washington, d.c. is remembering a community leader, the family of mike gill says he was shot monday in his own vehicle and later died. his wife writing the father of three's sudden departure has left a void in our lives that can never be filled. last week's series of attacks the latest in a rash of carjackings nationwide. in oakland, california, this car swerved, blocking the road as a suspect gets out, pulling a gun on this approaching driver who eventually drives away. and in nearby san francisco this car caught on camera flying through trees, flipping over and crash landing. that vehicle was also car jacked. despite these headlines, the latest fbi data actually shows an overall drop in violent crime from january through september last year compared to 2022. that category includes carjackings. the fbi data shows auto thefts, however, did increase in larger american cities. washington, d.c., however, is not in line with the national trend of violent crimes decrea

let's go back to nbc news correspondent jesse kirsch who is in kansas city for us. jesse? >> reporter: based on what we know from officials, i'll give you a sketch of how this appears to have unfolded. right behind us here, that's union station. you can see there's a stage there. back-to-back super bowl champions. that is where they had been rallying after a parade. this started around noon eastern and the party was still going on for hours. i'd say it was wrapping somewhere around 3 p.m. eastern. apologies if my time is off. i will double check that. we of course are doing a time zone map over here, but what i can tell you based on what officials have said is to the left of that stage, that is the general area where officials say that this shooting is said to have occurred. you can see there still appear to be first responders gathering out there. more broadly this field, which was filled with thousands of people, there continue to be some people trickling through the area, but by and large the crowds are gone. i want to flag a couple of things that stuck out from the pre

joining us now, nbc news correspondent jesse kirsch. good morning.hat we thought would be a day of celebration, the chiefs' super bowl parade, that turned into a tragedy. what more are you hearing this morning? >> reporter: willie, everything was wrapping up. imagine any other large event, sporting event. it could have been a football game where people knew things were over and were trickling out. that's what we were seeing, by and large. at the same time, we started noticing people over here were running away from the stage area. at the same time, what appeared to be police officers were rushing in. that's when we knew that something appeared to have gone terribly wrong here. according to three law enforcement officials briefed on the case, this does not appear to be terrorism related at this point. we still don't know why, what was supposed to be a giant party, turned violent. it only took moments for a city full of super bowl joy to be overcome with grief. >> we became part of a statistic of too many americans. those who have experienced a mass sh

. >> that was nbc's jesse kirsch with that report. >>> and we roll into the fourth hour of "morning joee could vote this week on a bipartisan bill addressing border security and foreign aid. the $118 billion package was released yesterday. it calls for over $20 billion in security measures aimed at reducing crossings at the southern border. it would raise the standard of asylum. it grants new emergency authority to the white house and homeland security department to close the border. a large chunk of the security package, more than $60 billion will go towards supporting ukraine. $14 billion would be given to israel, and $10 billion would be given for humanitarian assistance for civilians in gaza and the west bank. seems like there's something in there for everyone. last night speaker mike johnson posted online that the house won't even bring the bill up for a vote. the lead republican senator who negotiated the bill, james lankford of oklahoma, responded. >> i'm a little confused. it builds border wall, expands border patrol officers, detention beds, creates a faster process for deporta
