let's check back in with meteorologist jessica burch. >> clear blue 22. that's what we say in aviation. we will see a repeat of that in the forecast tomorrow. but once we head into the thursday forecast, that's the big game changer as we see a system moving in from the north bringing us another series of showers that will last throughout thursday, friday and saturday as we head into the afternoon hours, widespread showers throughout the bay and it tapers into sunday. that exact same system will bring in heavy snow for our friends up in the sierra. it moves in from the gulf of alaska. as it swirls toward us into late this week, we will see about an inch of rain on average from wine country to the santa clara valley. it tapers into the sunday forecast leaving us with drier conditions to kick off early next week. here is what the weather prediction center says, close to two inches in the santa cruz mountains. up in the sierra, those mountains will see heavy snow expected. a winter storm watch is in effect -- it will be starting thursday into the sunday forec

jessica burch is here with the very latest. we saw the mayor and that rain was still coming down. >>> absolutely. it is a first alert weather day. as we look at yesterday's impacts from the atmospheric river all the way down to morgan hill we saw over two inches of rain in those communities. the more north we went, the more impressive the storm got. let's talk about novato. wind speeds in marin got to around 102 miles per hour recorded by national weather service. match that with the heavy rain in the north bay and novato got over four inches within a 24 hour period. as we look at what's happening now, that doppler is still active. some of us are looking out our windows thinking what is she talking about? but some of us are dealing with active weather. this is very unstable. we can see pop up storms this afternoon. i was looking a second ago from our live cam, which i can show you, zach out real fast, this is our friends across the bay bridge, poor conditions with visibility, rainy as can be. let's pull back and show you other

meteorologist jessica burch has a preview of what we can expect. >> it is more dry here in the bay area with 50s in the forecast stretching from the santa clara valley up into the northbay. lighter winds this afternoon too and we are gearing up for more rain right around the corner. it will not be nearly as drastic as what we kicked off the work week with but we still have significant amounts throughout the bay area. this is a great tool on a day like today where you see the scattered showers trickling through the inland areas, amounting to small amounts. there won't be much. as we wake up tomorrow morning, we gear up for more rain impact and the commute. we have heavy pockets of showers at times and we will see a half inch in areas like fremont and a quarter closer to livermore and san jose. heading into tomorrow evening, it starts to dry up. the area of low pressure moves to the south where we will have drier conditions through the rest of the week. >>> southern california is dealing with the aftermath of that storm. firefighters responded to 307 mudslides in los angeles. one resident

let's go to meteorologist jessica burch in our virtual view studio. >>> hey, let's take a quick look starting with our live cam from the roof top. it's not bad, mostly cloudy. you saw rain drops at sfo. we have been seeing light showers throughout the bay area. as the storm starts into the bay as we zoom in closer, san francisco is mostly dry for the most part along the peninsula, that's where we are seeing action. san mateo into wood side, heavier dense rain to the south closer to red wood city. but that is continuing to track to the east. to the santa clara valley we are getting splashed with light showers into milpitas, fremont. then all the way into dublin in 15 minutes or so, light showers throughout the bay. into the next days, light showers we see now, they're going to be a thing of the past. tuesday and wednesday we are drying up with plenty sunshine and a nice warm up. we are talking about upper 60s, sunny skies until thursday. that's the game changer. the light showers today, like i said, into the evening tonight. it's going to be a thing of the past and we'll be left with

let's check in with meteorologist jessica burch. >> the exact same system that is bringing in plenty of snow for our friends in the sierra with one of the strongest storm systems we have seen is also bringing us rain in the bay area. we are starting to see these cloudy skies filled the bay with light, scattered showers trickled in. all throughout this afternoon, that frontal band moves throughout the bay area, producing a quarter inch of rain in the northbay. we continue to see this trend develop as we head into the evening hours tonight. we have a couple of wet days ahead of us. that major storm system starts to move its way into the pacific northwest . that same storm system is the reason why there is a blizzard warning for our friends in the sierra with snow levels from 5000 feet and above, getting closer to 10 feet of snow. this is a very strong storm system. avalanches are a concern with wind gusts expected to hit around 100 miles per hour. there is lots to break apart. we will talk more about the in just a bit. >>> for people who are already in the sierra, you better have stock

let's check back with meteorologist jessica burch.t's pretty but that does a lot of damage. >> absolutely. it is a first alert weather day for a variety of reasons. national weather service has advised us about a wind advisory, had that flood watch for the next two days. this paints a perfect picture as to what's going on. we see light rain from offshore. see this yellow? there is isolated heavier rain at times. if you do get hit with one of those, localized flooding is a concern. we are seeing it kick up along the peninsula near the pacifica and half moon bay. near ocean beach we will see it kick up within the next two to three hours especially along the peninsula moving to the east bay. we watch the storm from offshore with gusty conditions too. we are under the wind advisory but we can see wind speeds 40 to 50 miles per hour into the afternoon. that will linger into the overnight hours tonight as well as the storm. we see it continuing into tomorrow. tomorrow's commute as many of us are getting off the three day weekend, it's going

jessica burch is keeping us on track. >>> good morning.ay was wild when it came to the huge area of low pressure just offshore. the strongest area of low pressure we have seen since january 2010. it brought hurricane force wind and it brought in over an inch of rain within 24 hours into the santa clara valley, past two inches near los gatos. we are still feeling the impacts today. localized flooding is a concern and we are seeing downed trees and power outages widespread. we are here to tell you what happened yesterday and we are here to tell you about this week. there's a shift in the forecast in the next days. novato reported four inches of rain yesterday. look at what's happening today. the system is offshore but it is starting to track away. as we watch it move away, there are a couple things to mention. yesterday's winds were some of the strongest we have seen in a long time. hurricane force winds were reported. we saw gusts from the south around 102 miles per hour near pablo point and about 98 mile-per-hour winds. i want to say this,

let's check in with meteorologist jessica burch. >> we will continue to watch the storm sweep to the south. this is not an atmospheric river event today but it is a lot of rain we are expecting. i want to time that out for you coming up in futurecast but i also want to show you our rainfall versus the average. we are way above average from the santa clara valley to wine country. we are getting there often that you stay with the storm -- we are seeing some of the heaviest rain into concord. i mentioned it earlier, we are seeing that light dusting in the higher elevation areas near mt. hamilton. here is what it is looking like in the north bay. those showers are starting to come to an end. the bulk of the action is now in the southern portion of the peninsula, stretching down into the santa clara valley from 101 into hayward. we are going to watch the storm track to the south. off into livermore, a similar trend for the rest of us when it comes to light drizzle, whether you live up in the north bay or the santa clara valley. we are going to dry up into the overnight hours but we are no

meteorologist jessica burch is tracking them. >> we felt the showers widespread throughout the bay area for our valentine's day forecast. today and tomorrow, we are getting that dry break. this weekend's event will be a lot more impactful for us, widespread throughout the bay. he remembered two weeks ago when we had the back-to-back atmospherically prevents. localized flooding, downed trees and power outages. showers start rolling in from offshore. at the beginning, it starts off with light rain. this is what it is looking like on our large-scale models. that trough developing well out into the pacific. we see the second storm move in the sunday night into monday morning. this will kick off our work week and last through our tuesday forecast too. these also are back-to-back atmospherically prevents and we will see them continue to build into the california coastline lasting into next week. we will see 7 inches of rain down through areas south. along the peninsula, we are expecting around 3 inches. that is not only for us in the bay but all the way and sierra tahoe, anywhere up to 30 inc

here is meteorologist jessica burch. >> we are kicking off this weekend with dry conditions but it is time to talk about our next chance of showers in the forecast . this new area of low pressure moves its way into the bay area. we will see dry conditions with temperatures above average just-in-time for events happening in our community. the chinese new year's parade happening tomorrow. a similar trend in oakland where they're having that black joy parade. we will see partly cloudy skies with temperatures above average, lasting into saturday and sunday and then late sunday night, early monday morning, that is when we get our next splash of showers. we had a huge wash out event this week. this one will be quick moving, leaving us with drier conditions as early as tuesday heading into wednesday. monday morning we might get a splash of showers but we will see close to a 10th of an inch of rain . take a look at this. temperatures are in the mid to low 60s in areas like san francisco across that beautiful bay bridge. heading into this weekend, we will continue to crank up the heat more. or

first alert meteorologist jessica burch has your forecast from our virtual view studio. >> yesterday's storm gave us a half inch of rain in areas like dublin, san jose and into san francisco. as we take a look at what is happening today, we could see some pop-up storms into this afternoon. that area of low pressure starts to exit out of our region and high pressure will replace it. that dries us up as we head into our weekend forecast. here is what it is looking like today. the offshore showers will become more apparent in our local communities, producing .001 inches of rain through bodega bay and livermore. it clears up into the overnight hours tonight. high pressure starts to build in. partly cloudy skies tomorrow. actually, saturday is looking beautiful. it will be as sunny as can be. taking a look at our long-range models, that is when we see wetter than normal conditions returning to the bay area. we are getting that break that we need. it will be sunny this weekend, just in time for the 49ers to take on the chiefs. all across the board, the weather is starting to cooperate with u

let's get right to meteorologist jessica burch. >> we are seeing drier conditions throughout the next couple of days. we have unsettled weather . in the bay area, we are seeing a lot more clouds rolling in. temperatures will warm up heading into this weekend. that is perfect if you are heading out to any event the chinese new year parade. by sunday, we have big changes in the forecast. that is when the dry break ends. we see a little bit of a frontal system move-in from the gulf of alaska and it will cool our temperatures down and bring in a chance of showers sunday night into monday morning. it will happen overnight. it is mostly moving its way in from the north and there is a system building in from the south. this two together will bring in showers with temperatures dipping right back down to below average. let's take a look at what is happening today. we are talking about upper 50s and lower 60s. it was a very foggy morning for many of us in the bay area. the national weather service issued a dense fog advisory for our friends in solano county. we will see a repeat of that through

let's get right to meteorologist jessica burch. >> heavy atmospheric rivers building into the california coastline this weekend, causing a lot of issues when it comes to heavier rain and strong winds. today is the calm before the storm. 60s along the peninsula, all the way up into the heart of san francisco. we are seeing clouds roll in from offshore all throughout this afternoon. by tomorrow morning into those early morning hours, i 9:00, we will see a half inch of rain accumulate in the north bay and the storms get stronger through the afternoon. it will continue to ramp up and track to the east, producing over an inch of rain up in the north bay. a quarter inch of rain throughout the santa clara valley. it will be an impressive system into sunday and monday because that first storm comes and goes throughout saturday. our second system fills in and causes more issues. we see thunderstorm activity, heavy wind and downpours lasting all throughout the morning commute on monday. we will see the showers lingering into tuesday and wednesday. >>> a lot of people will make their way up to the

let's turn to first alert meteorologist jessica burch who has dramatic video for us. >> the dramatics from yosemite by the way. this is the so called fire fall in yosemite. it was sent from one of our viewers recently. the phenomenon happens every february at horse tail falls. as sun starts to set it hits at the right angle and looks like a fire. so beautiful. as we look at what's happening to kick off this work week, let's look at the first alert doppler. for now it is dry. throughout the bay area you might get mist along our coastline. dry conditions for now. that will look different into the next hours. we have a light splash of showers in some communities in the forecast today as we gear up for two dry days for eslast through thursday, friday, into our saturday forecast too. we'll dive more into that in a bit. this morning light coastal showers are expected. those clouds will continue to roll in from offshore. we can see light traces in the north bay but this is not amounting to much. here we go to the santa cruz mountains. light splashes there. peninsula and east bay really just

that's why we have first alert meteorologist jessica burch on stand by this morning and through the day. >> it's interesting. we saw hurricane force winds throughout the bay area. we saw devastating rainfall which brought plenty flooding especially for our friends in the north bay. as we look at rainfall totals just from yesterday's storm, we are already up to around an inch in areas like red wood city and past that into the santa clara valley. this is a live look from the airport in san jose. it's breezy as we are under a high wind warning extended by national weather service until 8:00 a.m. morning commute, we have thunderstorm activity and high winds. they will die down into this afternoon. let's zoom in closer to areas like novato for example. within a 24 hour period, areas in marin with over four inches of rain. we got over two inches in petaluma stretching into santa rosa, a close trend there. the huge system offshore, that area of low pressure, it dropped down fast from the gulf of alaska. it is still bringing in heavy wind as it tracks a little bit to the north. another thing i

but let's check in with jessica burch this morning. and of course leaving behind lot of damage around the bay area and here in san francisco. people were hit with some flash flooding and jessica, we're told one woman decided to take matters into her own hands of dealing with the flood water. >> absolutely. gianna. it is what the intersection of 23rd and dolores looked like just yesterday. several inches of water and in the middle of it all a neighbor using a rake to try to unclog that storm drain. now let's take a look at how much rain we ended up getting in the local community and i want to start off with the virtual reality map and drop the monitor show you in areas like san jose and fremont is livermore, close to a quarter inch of rain all throughout the day yesterday but watch what happened as that strong band moved its way in yesterday. of heavy showers widespread throughout the bay area. it really impacted san francisco topping off closer to 2 inches within a 24 hour period. where that video was actually taken. in santa rosa we pa

and jessica burch, we know you have your thoughts with them and their families.that is. >>> absolutely. it is. and to take a look at the conditions that those pilots and that crew were dealing with, just that tuesday into wednesday alone, the atmospheric river that impacted us here in the bay, it made its way down into southern california and we were reporting on it all week long and those were the conditions up near pine valley. you can see that snow falling as we extend from that wednesday morning to wednesday afternoon hour. all throughout those higher elevated areas. now the national weather service called for 6 to 10 inches of snow just in the higher peaks and those were the peaks that they were flying over just southwest of pine valley as they were trying to make their way back to san diego and this morning alone we still saw more heavy snow which made it really challenging for those rescuers to try to find that aircraft. and try to find those individuals. now as we take a look at what's happening for them today, that is starting to taper off, the condition

so we need to get right to jessica burch to get us updated on what we can expect with these bands ofn coming through. >> absolutely. it is a first alert weather day today and yesterday's atmospheric river brought in dangerous winds and heavy rain widespread throughout the bay area. many of us had a hard time falling asleep and i will say this. we saw downed trees and we saw power outages and we saw that localized flooding all the impacts that we are used the that we saw last year with the 17 atmospheric rivers that hit us here in california too. yesterday was a repeat of that and today, we're seeing the leftovers from that storm as they still build in from offshore. we can see light to moderate rain heading into if the next couple of hours for the morning commute and we are all under a flood watch this morning still in the bay area. that will last actually until tomorrow morning at 4:00 a.m.. as the storms start to slowly trickle off. anywhere from walnut creek up into martinez we're seeing lightning rain there right now. some moderate rain moving through daly city as it tracks off c

so let's turn to jessica burch to talk all about that. rain headed our way towards the bay area. >> absolutely. well, this is a look at the conditions at palisades tahoe yesterday. that ski resort got over a foot of snow from the wednesday into this thursday forecast. there's big changes right around the corner too heading into the weekend's forecast. let's zoom out real fast and head over to the other monotar and start off by saying. so getting up there is probably going to be challenge alone. they're already under a winter weather advisory that will start tomorrow morning in the 10:00 a.m. hour and lasts until sunday. at that point they can sew close to around 4 to 8 inches of snow. sunday night into monday is more dicey. now anywhere up to around 3 feet of snow at the peak levels. the reason why is because of that on top of that we're also seeing gusty winds expected. and these back-to-back storms are going to impact us here too in the bay. this is the first one as we head all the way into the saturday morning forecast. this frontal sy

and as part of that let's talk to jessica burch this morning.g jess. >> good morning, it's lot more calm for us today here in the bay area. but that was not the sight over in beverly crest yesterday. just the foothills along beverly hills down in los angeles. where mudslides, localized flooding, and of course that widespread rain event really impacted many people down south. and we saw our fair share just a day before. that exact same atmospheric river that impacted us here in the bay, as we went into sunday and monday's forecast, drove in from that area of low pressure which was the strongest storm we've seen here in the bay area since 2010. it is still impacting them down in southern california this morning. they're under that slight to marginal risk right now for localized flooding where the flood threat stays apparent for them even into tomorrow's forecast. widespread throughout the state of california, the climate prediction center is showing within the next 8 to 14 days still dealing with wetter than normal conditions and that matches up w

jessica burch, first alert weather day or taking a sigh of relief this morning. >> take a break and a breath of fresh air. still have some lingering showers but we need to pay attention to what happened down south yesterday. down in los angeles widespread and widespread throughout southern california this is the basin region down in los angeles. there has been major flooding and impacts from the exact same atmospheric river that we kicked off the workweek with. as we take a quick look over here at the different monitoring. what's happening for us here in the bay area. starting to finally get the much needed break. that atmospheric river moved its way south yesterday and this was yesterday's impact. straight into los angeles. straight into san diego. and it's still moving south down into the baja region as we head into this afternoon. and that left them with a moderate to high flood threat widespread throughout that region. today, it's looking a lot better for them down in los angeles but we are style keeping a close on the major impacts from the atmospheric river that not only impacte
