. >> cnn congressional correspondent jessica dean is on capitol hill.o the recommendations, and they are expansive, are now in the hands of congress. we're talking about close to 1,000 more capitol police officers, security, not just in the capitol but in home districts. but also a retractable and permanent fence ago rangement ar -- fencing arrangement around the capitol. how does this stand? >> you're talking about $2 billion and what the recommendations would add up. to right now there have been discussions about it. we have heard from some republicans that they're pushing back on that number. it doesn't need to be that expansive, that expensive. though they do agree with parts of it. as with anything up here on capitol hill, you need bipartisan action on this to get something done. and so that is the big question. can they find some middle ground to act, to put some of the things into place to make sure that this capitol complex and also the people who work in it and by it are safe as possible. as far as the horrible incident that happened on friday,

congressional correspondent jessica dean is on capitol hill watching all of this. new security concerns at the capitol. what are you hearing from lawmakers now? >> reporter: kate, lawmakers are certainly heartbroken and devastated over what happened here on friday. but what we are hearing from them is they want to find balance between allowing the capitol to be open in the way it's been known for for so many years, it is the people's house. people can come here and visit their lawmakers. but also, ensuring security for the lawmakers here, for the people that work here. and where is that balance? what does that look like? we certainly did get a report, you remember, the house speaker nancy pelosi tasked retired lieutenant generous sell honoray to put a report together, coming with recommendations including put putting retractable fencing up. hirings hundreds more capitol police officers, a number of recommendations that would need roughly $2 billion in funding and it's stalled where that goes from here. can they get bipartisan support to pass that funding package? a

i want to bring in our colleague jessica dean also there at the capitol, slightly different vantage pointhat you have, jessica, give us a sense, what are you seeing and hearing from where you're at? >> erica, as to where i am, i'm on the base floor of the capitol, looking directly at the scene right now and what i can tell you is there are dozens of first responders, law enforcement out there, gathered around this scene, and as lauren was just describing to you, this is a main entrance into the capitol. if you've been to the capitol you'll remember, that there are barricades that come off the ground that will stop traffic. from coming in. and what i'm looking at is that barricade that is currently up, which would stop traffic from coming in and like a little hut that's the check point. there is a police guard directly in front of that barricade and there appears to be a civilian car on the other side of it. they are looking at that right now. there are a number of capitol police vehicles out here. i'm looking at an ambulance right now. so a large law enforcement presence right in front of
