i'm jessica dill, 9news -- jessica doyle, 9news now. >>> the amount of sleep we get can affect our minds later in live. a new study says women who averaged too little or too much sleep a night had lower cognitive function than those who slept seven hours a day. randall pinkston has more. >> reporter: sleep is a problem for many people, especially as they get older. >> i probably get around average seven. dow feel i could use another hour probably. >> i'm lucky if i could get four or five. >> reporter: a new study from the alzheimer's association finds not getting the right amount of sleep could affect your mind later in life. researchers looked at 15,000 women over the age of 70 and found that those who slept too little or too much had worse cognitive function as they aged. >> on the short end women who were sleeping five or less hours and on the long end women were sleeping nine or more hours. >> reporter: researchers performed a number of memory tests over six years on the women in the study. they found that too little or too much sleep was equivalent to aging a year and a half. with a

i'm jessica doyle, 9news now. >>> preparations are being made to release a young bald eagle into the wild. the stranded bird is undergoing rehabilitation, thanks to the dramatic actions of a boater in long island. jennifer mclopez has that story. >> reporter: mitch kramer of oyster bay and dog, jessie, have never made a save like this before. responding in their tow boat to a stranded sailor, they saw something struggling in the distance. >> as i got closer i could tell it was a bird. i couldn't leave it there so i decided to give it a shot and see if i could grab it. >> reporter: the exhausted, frightened bird turned out to be a one-year-old bald eagle, sick and strand in long island sound. >> it had about a six foot wing span, it was very intimidating. it was a lot bigger when i pulled it out of the water than i thought it was. >> reporter: he placed the weakened bald eagle into his cabin. he immediately called his wife, an animal rehabilitate tore. >> refirst thought the eagle was blind, eyes were crusted over, very thin, it was crawling with lice. >> reporter: transported to donn

i'm jessica doyle, 9news now. >>> there's a new networking organization in the washington, d.c. area. it's all about professional women's making connections while giving back to charity. and our own monika samtani is here to talk about launch network. launch network is a group that she started and actually they're here in the studio. >> they are. >> i'm so happy that they're here. tell me about this. why did you start this organization? >> what i saw was that there are south asian women in d.c. and across the country just making amazing strides in their professions from the traditional professions like medicine and law to now becoming c.e.o.s of their companies, owning restaurants, it, you name it, they're in it right now. so i decided why not bring everybody together, strengthen our community but also have a common goal of giving back to charity. >> that is a great goal. that really is. so what are some of the projects that you've country? oo that you've done? >> we've given back to organizations sum as autism speaks. we -- such as autism speaks. we also gave to an organization

. >>> jessica doyle, we see some light behind you there. >> reporter: that's right mike. this is the situation that you are seeing in northern virginia, montgomery county and the cyst, all -- and the district, all throughout the washington area where the lights are out. it is the case of the haves, with power, and the have nots. we are right here at this intersection at route 7 and glenn forest road. as you can see, these little are out -- lights are out. this is a situation throughout the washington area. of course you see a dark intersection, you are supposed to treat it as a four way stop, in this case a three-way stop. but a lot of folks, i'll tell you, especially with night driving, are not doing so. we are seeing them sort of blow through this intersection. the problem is at night, or early morning, you can't even see that there are lights here, unless you are used to this area. so we want to give a cautionary note to folks, seeing somebody drive right through now, you are supposed to stop in those situations. between novak and dominion virginia power currently 87,0

i'm jessica doyle, 9news now. >>> we have a commuter alert for metro riders. the transit agency is going to slow down trains the next time it's extremely hot. a heat kink in the track is what caused last friday's derailment near the west hyattsville station on the green line. no one was injured but three cars jumped the tracks. metro says it had no warning about the track problems. trains were going about 55 miles an hour in that section but now -- from now on during extreme heat, the trains are going to be slowed to 35 miles an hour. >>> and we have important information for this weekend. if you are a metro rider on the blue and yellow lines, there will be no service between pentagon city and brad rock ode. bradrockkbrad -- braddock road. shuttle buses will be operating but you need to add an additional 30 minutes to your travel time. there will also be single tracking on parts of the green, red and orange lines. >>> well, as we start planning our summer vacations, there is always the question of what to do with our furry friends? while we're out of town? wel

. >> jessica doyle joins us with one of the hardest hit areas. we see street lights behind you. >> reporter: good morning. good morning to both of you. the situation here, let me give you a little visual here. this is military road here, along argue county. sort of a secondary feeder road here for a lot of commuters. we are going to get a lot of traffic here. doesn't look so bad. you see lights on. two-thirds of northern virginia right now. but let me show you about the problems one-third of the folks are dealing with here. you are going to see a line coming down. this is a major power line here, this is quincy road. i'm going to stay a short distance away from this, because this may be partially energized. it is tangled in small trees and then you get over here and you have one of these oak trees. some trees in these neighborhoods are 100 years old. that is about 1000 pounds of leaves that have come down from this storm that we had on friday. a lot of it came down on saturday. about 27% of residents in northern virginia are still without power.
