kpix 5's jessica flores reports. >>> reporter: the vigil started at 6 p.m. yesterday and will go for 24 hours. there are a handful of people sleeping in front of the hall of justice. the plan was killed by police in 2016. they want the officers involved to be prosecuted. the family of luis "gongora pat" has been rallying here at least for two weeks. they are hoping to put pressure on district attorney george gascon to file charges against the two involved officers. the family says gascon promised a decision on charges today which also would have been "gongora pat"'s 38th birthday. he was shot and killed on shotwell street between 18th and 19th streets by his tent in a homeless encampment. police fired in self-defense because "gongora pat" lunged at them with a 13" knife. the family filed a federal lawsuit against sfpd. >> we know based upon eyewitness statements and video evidence, we know based upon the physical evidence that mr. gongora did not do those things. >> reporter: now, gongora pat was an indigenous mayan man who spoke little english and spanish.
