jessica schneider with the latest from cincinnati. >> reporter: miguel, zoo officials spent the last few days planning for modifications for the barrier that separates the visitors to the gorilla exhib exhibit. once the modifications are in place, they will reopen on tuesday. they pointed out the differences in the barrier. it will be 42 inches high. that is 6 inches higher than the three feet that the former barrier was. they also say it will have solid wood beams on top and as well as a knotted rope netting. they say that will prevent anyone from getting through. they say the 3-year-old boy went under the last rail that was there that served as the barrier. the zoo is saying it is making modifications despite the fact the previous barrier did pass the accreditation by the association of zoos and aquariums. it adhered to all safety guidelines. once the improvements are made, they will reopen on tuesday. in the meantime, the cincinnati police department concluded the investigation. it is now on to the prosecutor. the prosecutor said it could be as soon as today to make a final determ

we will begin our coverage here with cnn correspondent jessica schneider. near the pulse nightclub. jessica, walk us through the timeline. what do we know about what happened inside that club and when? >> reporter: well, john, it was just about 24 hours ago that all of this horror began unfolding. just after 2:00 in the morning as a very packed pulse nightclub where about 350 people were inside, a gunman entered. the first person he encountered was an off-duty police officer who was working security. he got past him and then entered the nightclub, where he took hostages, and he opened fire. it was for three tense and terrifying hours that he invaded the nightclub. it wasn't until 5:00 in the morning that police finally, three hours later, were able to knock down a wall of the nightclub with a heavily armored vehicle. they were then able to get hostages out, and they finally shot and killed the gunman. but the meantime, there were text messages from some of those people trapped inside. they were desperately calling out to their family members for help, askin

i want to turn to my colleague, cnn's jessica schneider, here with the very latest. jessica?bert abel is the owner of lotus gun works in jensen beach, florida, and he tells officials that he had a man that came into his gun shop and wanted to buy 1,000 rounds of ammunition as well as body armor, but it wasn't until after the pulse nightclub shooting that abel realized it was actually omar mateen who had tried to make that purchase and then was turned away. >> when he was on his cell phone, he had a conversation in a foreign language that was more concerning. then he came back and he was requesting ammo. sow wanted mulli eed bulk ammo . at that time he declined any business and he left the store. we had no link, no contact. we didn't know who he was, but we did contact authorities and let them know we just had a suspicious person that was in here. >> reporter: now abell said he called the fbi about this attempted alarming purchase, but with no purchase records or id on this person, this investigation could just not move forward. in the meantime, we're also learning omar and hi

contact authorities and let them know we just had a suspicious person that was in here. >> cnn's jessica schneideraying about this, jessica? >> reporter: don, the fbi is stressing the timeline on this and noting the first thing that happened was the store clerk did see the man come into the gun shop in jenson beach, florida, saying the man requested the body armor and ammunition and then talked on the cellphone in a foreign language. this store clerk contacted the manager, they contacted the fbi and gave the fbi some details, the fbi called them back. but the point to note the fbi says is that the gun shop owner did not make this connection that this was potentially omar mateen until after the pulse nightclub shooting. so essentially, the gun shop owner didn't have identifying details of the person that came in and raised suspicion. they didn't have any surveillance video and they certainly didn't have any purchase records since they turned this man away so the fbi saying since they had very little to work with here they couldn't move forward in any investigation. don? >> all right. jessica in orl

our jessica schneider is on the scene in orlando and evan perez is in washington. we heard from a gun store owner who says he told the fbi about the shooter trying to buy body armor and a bulk amount of ammunition. what do we know about that? >> well, wolf, this is something that occurred five weeks or so ago. and this is a store owner in jensen beach which is a town right next to ft. pierce where the shooter lived. he says that he had some suspicions about this attempt to buy body armor but he didn't have a name. he didn't have information about who this person was. after the orlando shootings he recognized him as being the person in the store. the store called the fbi to report suspicions about another group of men they thought were middle easterners who had come to "n" to buy police gear. the fbi did come and investigate that and found those men were visiting law enforcement from a middle eastern country and they were able to find that there was nothing suspicious about that visit. it was in closing that investigation that the fbi was told about this other suspi

jessica schneider joins me live on the phone with the plan. lay sounds like there was a good reason for it. what is it, jessica? >> reporter: the zoo said it has been reevaluating the barrier. the barrier that existed on saturday was just a metal railing that was about 3 feet highway and it had space in between it and the ground so that the 3-year-old boy got through about five feet of bushes and into the moat below. what they say will be changed when it reopens on tuesday will be several things. it will be new barrier railing that will actually be about 6 inches higher. it will go up to 42 inches. it will have a solid wood beam at the top, and then this is key, a knotted rope netting which means that presumably no one will be able to climb under it. they may be able to try to jump over it, but at 42 inches, that's pretty high for a child. so those new measures taking effect by the time the exhibit opens on tuesday, and the zoo did express thstress that the p barrier did pass multiple inspections and it did adhere to safety guidelines. but give
