let's check in with jessica yellin who is over at obama headquarters in chicago. also checking with candy crowley who is in boston and mitt romney headquarters. first we go to jessica. jessica, the state of virginia, how confident does the obama campaign feel about their position in virginia? >> i've been talking to them throughout the day, anderson, and they feel incredibly bullish about virginia. as you know, this is one of those states, if they -- you know, if governor romney does not win virginia, his path to 270 is very difficult. and they like in particular, they say in the data the african-american turnout that they are seeing there. they say it is beating what they saw in 2008 better than the turnout in 2008. if that does hold up, if that proves to be true, that would be very good news for the president, indeed. this is based on their internal numbers, and that's what they're telling me. but if that proves to be true in the actual vote totals, it would be a good night for the president, indeed, anderson. >> let's check in with candy. what are you hearing ab

>> jessica yellin, thanks. traveling with the president in cincinnati. >> at the center of the storm of controversy, ohio's secretary of state came to this program to explain himself. he addresses claims by some democrats that his office has been trying to disenfranchise voters. that's next. >>> if ohio becomes the deciding factor in the presidential race, we could be in for a long legal battle. a controversy is already brewing here over provisional ballots. critics say the new requirements may be aimed at disenfranchising some voters. cnn's joe johns is digging into the ohio ballot controversy. >> in ohio, it was all about provisional ballots. a provisional ballot is a ballot that people have to fill out, if for some reason their right to vote has been challenged. some states like ohio, a voter needs to show identification to vote provisionally. now, the official dispute is about whether the voter or a poll worker fills out the part of the form that indicates what kind of identification was presented. one side

jessica yellin is traveling with the president. first of all, jessica, what does his itinerary today reveal? >> surprise focus on wisconsin in the closing days of the campaign. he is on his way from wisconsin right now to diowa which is across the river from wisconsin. and he is visiting wisconsin three times in the closing days of this race. that's a state that's traditionally a blue state. a state he should haven't have to be fighting for but the campaign manager says they're taking nothing for granted. they've learned from the past and as you know this is the home state of paul ryan. precious time to be expending on a traditional blue state at the end. the president is cross crossing the nation going is from ohio to virginia to florida to colorado back and forth across the battleground states in the final hours. and part of the message is countering the message you hear from romney. governor romney says he will bring big change, the president arguing he is the only one who can carry that banner. listen to this. >> you may not agr

let's check in with jessica yellin at obama headquarters and also candy crowley at romney headquarters. first, let's go to jessica. >> reporter: well, it's just gotten significantly noisier here since we made that projection. you saw how the room went wild when we called michigan. that is a sign to people here and at obama's headquarters as well that the auto bailout no doubt made a huge difference for the president for voters in michigan and they no doubt will read it as a sign that he could score very well with voters in ohio. still of course too close to call. i can also tell you that they feel good about colorado. they think that they are on track with where they were headed into colorado based on their 2008 model, and that that is a state that they know as well as any state because they have the same person working that state who mapped out democratic senator michael bennett's campaign there. he waged a bitterly fought battle in 2010 against a tea party candidate and eked out a victory when most other democrats didn't, and that person also helped president obama plan his campaign

jessica yellin for us this evening, thank you, jessica.and the president don't make a deal, everybody's taxes go up next year. >> that's right, but what you may be surprised by is the country's top wage earners and what they pay. tom foreman joins us now with a reality check. >> the simple truth is the white house pushed this notion that not only do the wealthy not pay what they call their fair share, but they have been given bigger breaks over the year. let's go to 1980 and get a sense for this. this is roughly, if you added up all of the taxes, state, local, and federal, this is what you had, below $25,000, 20% of income, $75 to $100,000, and look at this, back in 1980, about half of people making over $450 were taxed about half of what they made. there has been a reduction, down here in the lowest level, a 1% reduction. up here, only a 3% reduction. up here, a 4% reduction. but when you get to the top level, there is a 7% reduction. now, this is all in your interpretation. the white house wants to say look at this massive advantage that

our chief white house correspondent jessica yellin will talk about this, and you bring up a very good point now. during the second term campaign, but she's been pretty clear, right, on his stance regarding the fiscal cliff and his obama line. tell us what it is. >> that's right, suzanne. he has laid out that his negotiating terms include the following. he is willing to compromise and raise some revenue by altering some parts of medicare and medicaid on entitlement reforms. he is also insistent that some revenue be raised by changing the tax rates. you know, those bush tax cuts expire at the end of this year, and he has said that the wealthiest americans must pay more. we've heard it on the campaign trail over and over. one thing he has hit is that those who make $250,000 and more must pay more. maybe he'll move that number. who knows. he did say quite clearly the white house has that they would veto any bill that does not include a tax increase for the wealthiest americans, suzanne. >> jessica, we heard boehner, john boehner, actually within the last 30 minutes or so talking about tha

jessica yellin in chicago with the obama campaign skpaand cand crowley in boston with the romney campaign. first we start with jessica. jessica? >> reporter: hi, anderson. well, obama campaign officials so far say they like what they're seeing. they're seeing absolutely no surprises the in the data, and they were expecting turnout to be good for them, so they are happy. what they see so far is no surge for governor romney, they say, and they see that both florida and north carolina are dead heats. that's what they tell us, of course, you have to factor in pro-obama spin, that's coming from obama aides, but dead heats in florida and north carolina, positive for the president, because going in, those states saw polling, advantage governor romney. now, just before i spoke to you, i interviewed one of the president's top campaign aides, stephanie cutter, and i asked her the president's mood today. this is what she had to say. >> he'ser serene, he's calm, h excited. we had an amazing rally last night, in des moines. very emotional. this is his last campaign, that was his last campaign event. h

let's go to jessica yellin right now. chief white house correspondent watching all of this unfold in chicago. jessica. >> well, the euphoria in the room is evident. these people have worked hard for the president, everyone in this room was in one way or another a volunteer for the campaign. this was a very different kind of campaign from 2008 what is not different is the kind of coalition the president put together to re-elect him. a very different vision and makeup of america that is diverse, that is heavily latino, african-american, relied on single women and where the president played heavily to their interests. and this is a kind of coalition the president made clear. he was interested in appealing to, and it's a lesson that the republican party will learn from. i had also point out, wolf, that the president did make some explicit promises about what he would do in a second term. cutting the deficit and not extending the tax cuts for the wealthiest americans, among others. >> jessica hold on for a moment. i want to lis

. >> let's go to jessica yellin, who has been following president obama today. ica, how would you describe the mood in the president's camp? clearly there's not that kind of huge euphoria we saw four years ago but that doesn't necessarily mean his vote won't come out and re-elect him, but are they confident or are they nervous? >> hi, piers. they are confident. what they argue is that they have data on their side. as candy says, they have -- it's a different universe. they point to the early vote in state after state coming out in a larger number for president obama than for governor romney and that polls showing that the president has the slightest but meaningful edge over governor romney. now, obviously as candy says, there is a counter to every point the obama team makes but they say that their models show the president will win tomorrow, plus they argue they have the ground game and they have this. behind me, piers, is a crowd of people that they say are part of the crowd that helped elect him four years ago back in iowa, where it all started when the preside

jessica yellin is our chief white house correspondent. the president has been meeting with people the past few days and trying to figure out what concessions he would make. what do you think is reasonable? what's he thinking, jessica? >> reporter: hey, erin. well, in terms of what the democrats are willing to offer, there would be some willingness to alter entitlements and the packages that are offered to the wealthiest americans in medicare, for example. but in terms of revenue, they are looking for republicans to make the concessions. the president just met with progressives here at the white house today and reiterated his position that families making $250,000 and more must see their taxes go up. he told the group, according to multiple people i talked to inside that meeting he couldn't have been clearer on the campaign trail, that americans want to see this change, and that he's not going to move off that position. so when it comes to changing the revenue formula, it seems like democrats are really looking for republicans to give. rig
