jetblue bumps the fewest passengers due to oversold flights. virgin american takes the best care of your baggage. southwest has the fewest percentage of customer complaints. the worst express jet and american airlines flights arrive on time less than 77% of the time that's a tie for west. sky west bumps the highest percentage of passengers. american eagle ranks worse in lost or damaged baggage. >> the airlines had a pretty strong year? >> in some respects one of the best on record. flights are on time about 82% of the time. that's up from 80% last year. as an industry, for every 10,000 passengers, airlines bump nearly one from their flight. that's up from last year. for every thousand passengers, about 3 reports of lost or damaged bag. that's better than last year. as for customer complaints, airlines fielded more than 11,000 in 2012. that's an increase of more than 20%. reports' authors say passengers also hold airlines responsible for issues outside of their control like slow airport security and crowded parking lots, shep? >> shepard: rich,

jetblue, air tran and delta and hawaiian. mishandled baggage complaints were down. their on time performance last year up almost 2% to 81.8%. that's the good news. now the bad news. it doesn't take far to find it. complaints up more than 20% to the airlines across the board. the airlines also bumped more passengers from oversold flights in 2012. the five worst airlines out of 14 that were ranked, american, american eagle, regional carrier skywest and expressjet. united down at the bottom. not surprising. remember, they had the three major computer outages last year causing widespread delays. that's a big reason why united is at the bottom. regardless of the airline, though, they had a good year for investors. the airline index was up substantially last year. in fact, it was one of the leading sectors, bill and mandy. when you look at the airlines overall, good and bad but overall the negative outweighing the good last year. >> the more perks these airlines cut back on for people like us that are actually traveling on the airline, the better for the shareholders, rig

when you look at somebody like a jetblue because of their exposure to the new york area airports.area in terms of the national grid. or united with o'hare. they're going to be impacted probably more than others. i think the bottom line is that we're not going to see a huge outcry until there's a big storm system that goes through and then we see massive delays. then you have people complaining vociferously at airports. that's when you're going to have people saying, what's going on here? in the meantime, delays like we've seen yesterday or today, that's not enough to get people really, really upset. >> phil, i would add, by the way, another distinction to make in addition to what you correctly said is that we should look at the airlines that handle the most short haul travel. southwest, among the major airlines, is really an airline that makes its money taking people between places like dallas and houston. trips that you could do by car. and so that's one that might be a bit more disproposition gnrti impacted than others. >> seth, in your view, how long -- i mean, we don't know ho

that to some other airlines that have better reputations as far as the consumer experience, like a jetbluesouthwest. those companies more consistently make money. and lastly, if you look at the first quarter earnings that everybody's applauding today. yes, they beat expectations, but revenue growth was in the low single digits and net income was below last year's levels. so they beat expectations, but they were very low expectations. >> jonathan, what about you and the technicals. how do these charts look to you? >> clearly, both of these stocks have been stuck on the runway for the past five years, but we think they're getting ready to take off. if we look at the weekly charts, we'll see why. first, the weekly chart at delta, it's been in a pretty wide trading range, 15 on the upside and 4 on the downside since 2008. earlier this year, it broke above that 15 resistance, pulled back, found support, and looks to be heading higher. a weekly chart of u.s. airways, same thing. 15 on the upside, 2 on the downside. recently, it broke above that resistance, pulled back, and now it's heading highe
