if i were going to be a buyer are airlines, i'd buy jetblue. if you don't want any part of this trade -- i'm a little nervous about the rails. when you see crude rally back, it still can't rally as much as it should. it's been cut in half. it should still be a tail wind for a lot of these airlines. you guys have talked about it to a great extent, talking about capacity issues, talking about fares and being competitive. jetblue seems to have figured it out. >> sticking with the dow because the biggest market story of the year is actually the lack of a story at all. since the beginning of the year, the dow has done something it it hasn't done in a hundred years, trading in its smallest range ever. jonathan, what are you seeing and what sort of indicators for the market overall? >> you said it, the market has been quite narrow range and boring this year. i don't think people realize how narrow it's been. one of the things we looked at is the intra year range for the daf y dow jones industrial average. we have the closing high to the closing low, t

most of these names except jetblue topped out one january. ual look like it's broken. delta looks like it can long around the $42 level. jetblue obviously traded down in sympathy today but i think that story is somewhat intact. i think when you hear mr. parker say we're going to act in kind, what he said is scary stuff. when one guy goes the rest go. delta goes 42 and jetblue. >> if there's trouble in airlines, there could be more trouble for transports which is a group that has not confirmed recent highs on the broader market. >> you southern like a dow theorist. >> the airlines all year haven't acted well. one or two maybe had new highs. they have been in down trends. when you broaden it out, fed exnever made a new high. ups had some problems. to me i think when you look at the airlines today it was just such a crowded trade. when you see the volume that traded to the down side and the ferocity of selling it may not be done tomorrow. there will be sellers on balances for days. >> again, this is the airline industry. the industry that has disappointed investors and no

jetblue, they have been gaining steam. they have been going down.ake a look at the longer-term chart. you can see that this group peaked in 2001. that was at the end of january. since then, it has been up and down, but mostly down. yesterday, this index and heard a decline of 20%. a lot of hedge fund managers happen been getting into airlines in the past few years. capacitye been discipline, airlines not expanding their fleets by much. that has given them more pricing power. tepper who exited his american airlines stake in the first quarter doesn't still hold delta and ual and jetblue. does still hold alaska and ual and some american airlines as well and leon cooperman holds ual as well. the prospect for the airlines might be changing because the view on capacity is changing. last year, we saw a 3% increase in capacity. this year, that number could go up to 9%. these guys are staying in. we will see of these airlines can rebound beyond what we are seeing in today's session. scarlet: great context with the big investors. the big names invested in the

jetblue is up almost 3%. american airlines bouncing back by about 1%.his comes on the heels of a long decline, as betty pointed out. take a look at the bloomberg united states airline index. actually, it looks like we don't have that right now. from its peak in late january, 2006, through yesterday, it fell -- in late january, through yesterday, a big decline. what was happening, in part, higher.ces had been more importantly, there is a perception about capacity. for years, the airlines have been more disciplined about capacity. they have not been growing their fleets by as much. therefore, they have more pricing power. however, this year, there is a perception that capacity will grow more meaningfully. for the full-service carriers, we will see a jump to 9% capacity growth from 3% capacity growth last year. this big decline we've seen in airline stocks, who might have been hit by that? we had a lot of prominent hedge fund managers talk up the airlines in recent years. david sold out of his american airlines stake in the first quarter according to filin

jetblue, american airlines, all rebounding at least a little bit as i mentioned from big declines.ake a look at the satellite bloomberg terminal year to date. a mye the terminal of screen. this piece here was january 26, that's when the airlines traded as a group at the highest and 2001. they really have been climbing over the past several years. they had capacity than had been helped recently by lower oil prices. since then we'd seen a steady decline and yesterday the index entered a bear market before the rebound as it declined at least 20%. so, he is feeling the pain. watching those declines i was reminded that there are a lot of high-profile hedge fund managers who speak to the airlines. appaloosa, he did exit his state in american airlines as of the latest filing but he still holds a substantial stake in delta, ual, and jetblue. owns alaska's firm air, which he also cut. leon cooperman, as well, he holds ual also. so, we will see if we see an adjustment whether or not they will hang tight. much,: thank you so julie. top stories this morning, in london ford is offering drivers
