[ laughter ] the jetblue ceoaid "customers shouldn't have to choose between a low fare and a great experience, and jetblue has shown it's possible to have both," and spirit airlines has shown it's not. [ laughter ] spirit in real estate terms, is what you'd call a "fixer-upper." it'd be a clash in cultures for sure. spirit is a budget airline, no frills. ever fly spirit? jetblue offers things like free wifi, snacks, drinks and has a real bathroom instead of a bucket that everyone passes around. [ laughter ] senators elizabeth warren and bernie sanders said they were worried about the merger worsening customer service. a spokesperson for spirit just started laughing hysterically until they had to carry her out. we've been watching the airline stocks today like jetblue under pressure.at its lowest level in about a decade. the industry is feeling jitters from investors from a big summer of travel investors getting worried about bottom-line performance with these higher jet fuel prices and rising labor costs whether airlines can raise their fares to offset those expenses. matt: let's talk about that with one of the best voices in the industry, george ferguson who covers airlines here at bloomberg intelligence. we are seeing a big jump in the crude prices and that affects the jet fuel market. as you would expect, those prices are following. what does it look like to you? >> you framed it pretty well in the last session. fuel prices have popped quickly, 50% since last quarter. i think airlines had dialed in the right level of fares to manage the higher labor costs. fuel has been a surprise that knocked the heck out of earnings estimates for 3q. it felt like there would not be enough strength of demand in two q to keep fares up. we had seen domestic fares starting to sl

massie was talking about with jetblue spirit merger.in march my colleagues, all of my colleagues in florida and i sent you a letter and the attorney general urging you to approve jetblue spirit merger. since that time you've made some public statements that have been elementary towards doj and their challenge. in florida jetblue is legally binding come has made some commitments to the florida attorney general to grow flights of this combined airline or 50% to out our state. the agreement also requires employee growth including 2000 new jobs, current current employee numbers of both airlines will also be retained and 1500 jobs currently outsourced will become florida's jobs. i just think please be mindful that the state with the most overlap of the two carriers is overwhelmingly supportive of that, of the agreement of the merger. so do you have any comments about the pending matter, or can you make comments on the pending matter? >> i need to be careful in comedy about it because it is an open process, but what i would take here to empha

look at the performance of southwest or jetblue. the significant struggles there. but you really need an overwhelmingly strong climate for the airlines to continue their fundamental strength and in that circumstance we know what the reaction will be from the federal reserve. it's going to be a return to being adversarial and that will create a moment where the fundamental strength the airlines are receiving from that strong economy will slam on the brakes. >> we've been talking about how much people are willing to spend on services, on traveling, on concerts. weiss, the company is saying, look, fuel is more expensive. that's cutting into costs. joe is obviously a little concerned about the revenue growth coming back down as people sort of normalize their travel. what do you make of what's going on with the airlines here today and potentially longer term? >> first of all, if you didn't remind joe about the airlines, i would have. while you sit at the trading desk there's a saying. the airlines are like beer. they're highly cyclical and this pent-up demand. as airlin

was that statement in reference to the jetblue spirit merger? >> yes partly. >> it troubles me somewhat has been on the subcommittee for antitrust and the judiciary because the d.o.j. already reviewing airline mergers to see if that mergers are anticompetitive. it seems like a waste of resources for two agencies to duplicate work. i am worried that's exactly what is happening. dot and d.o.j. are going to review the same merger. so, do you think the d.o.j. and ftc are unable to review mergers and protect american consumers? so of course not the way the division of labor works we have distinct but sometimes overlapping authorities. so assess often the case with different parts of interagency dealing with the same issue we see it to the extent it statutorily appropriate to coordinate. we limited in how i talk about this because this is an open proceeding. but we are trying to do is stand with d.o.j. align our authorities where they cover the same turf but also recognize with regard to our in my view, too long unused authority around public interest

we see small amounts of hedging at alaska and jetblue. the rest is don't. characterization. how much is this isolated to domestic travel in the united states and how much is this a broader softening that extends overseas? george: a lot of them built in pricing for this summer. everyone i talked to went to europe for vacation this year so everybody saw the strong dollar and booked overseas flights. i think three q look better for the full-service carriers because a lot of those tickets had been sold. once you get past the summer season for u.s. carriers, the demand is is not going to be there. and the strength that it is right now. fares will soften and we have already seen the domestic starting to tell off. some of the consumers not as well healed. they could not afford to pay the higher prices and in three q they were started toward us about yields and seeing some weakness in that demand. for overseas carriers, when we talk to people in europe, even the european carriers were seeing demand from u.s. consumers. one interesting thing i've heard from european
