we wanted to explore what does it mean to be jewish in the area today. the diversity and uniqueness and what makes it a place where people want to learn about and where the roots came from. we discovered that the pioneer spirit that brought everyone to the area is still the spirit that guides everyone today. >> the museum does a combination of programs attached to exhibits and also it doesn't have its own collection. it calls exhibits across the country and brings them to the area. so, california dreaming. how did that come about? >> we get a lot of comments from our visitors. they want to understand jewish life and half of the visitors come from the bay area and half from the world. half of the visitors are jewish and half aren't. we give the diversity of audiences to learn more. so, it's exciting. one of the key images of the show is this image from israel of their stain glass window. i think we have an image of that to show. what's remarkable, if you look in the upper right hand corner, moses is giving the ten commandments. it's not at mount sinai, bu

the hebrew academy is the only orthodox jewish school in the bay area. the school -- at the school god forbid, -- if the school, god forbid, closes down, there are no other alternatives. a lot of these families are russian people who are jewish orthodox, and as you know, they have experienced a lot of horrible things. my father was denied a job, even though he was perfectly qualified, due to his religion. he was also emotionally and verbally abused because he was said to -- he was a jew, and my parents went to save me from this experience by moving to america. before coming here, i did not know much about my heritage, but now i know about the holidays and a lot of my friends love going to the school because they feel like they are at home because there are a lot of people they can relate to. the parents are so concerned, they now have to worry about finding alternatives, and kids now -- at the school, god forbid, closes down, there is nowhere to turn to to learn about your heritage. if the antennas were to go up, i do not know what the parents would do.

you must have known other jewish activists. >> there was a prominent jewish family in atlanta. they owned a department store. i want to go back further than that. i grew up on college campuses. my father was an educator. i grew up on black college campuses. these campuses were peopled by jewish immigrants, escapees from the holocaust who could not live in germany anymore, but who had found a home here in the country. they had found a job in this country. i remember a man who had two daughters. fales. dr. fales had a thick german accent. his son wore lederhosen. they drove us crazy. [laughter] the can this had a fair complement of these immigrants who were just wonderful people. they were well-educated. this was at lincoln university. after that, morehouse, spellman, clark. and where i lived as well. populated by jews who had found a refuge on american soil. we were the first people -- these were the first people i knew to be jews. when my family moved to atlanta, we got to know this rich heritage of jewish atlantans. the leo -- dileo frank stories was not prominent in my life,
