from jfk the boston, everywhere is cancelled. >> flights are not expected to be rescheduled until airports on the eastern seaboard reopen. this is hurricane irene. where is the massive storm headed next? >> it is going up towards new york. right now the center is just to the east of washington d.c. around ocean city maryland. it will go of the new jersey coast for tonight and be in new york tomorrow. already heavy rain extended hundreds of miles out from this system. the rain is really going to be one of his big impact. here is a loop of the hurricane over the past 24 hours. has plowed through a carolina and virginia producing many winter ports up and over 70 mi. per hour. there it is right now just of the maryland coast. top gusts of wind are 100 mi. an hour. of the new jersey coast and it makes landfall in new york early tomorrow morning as a category one hurricane and then it is into northern new england by 5:00 p.m.. between now and then incredible amounts of rain. the axis of heaviest rain goes to the west of new york into new england and in some places could pick up between 6- 12 in.

that's what we are going to see areas east of the it and western parts of long island and places like jfk and rockaways and breezy point. dealing with a big storm surge and everybody getting a lot of rain. check out these models that. is 12 inches of rain. and going into the chesapeake bay and back out. in to the delaware bay it is significant. maybe 10 feet of the storm surge and then pulling in toward new york city certainly on long island and looks like a significant storm surge and that brings back out in the east river. we'll see flooding in the east river take a look at that bull's eye. 12 inches of rain across the lower hudson river valley. you get 12 inches of rain you will get flooding. a couple of weeks ago. inland flooding concerns . and so power outages can last for days. >> moving 16 miles per hour right now. at what point is the steering current it takes off and zooms on out of the here? >> about here. not before. it will move 18 miles per hour or so tomorrow. and then it gets in new england and accelerates and not a quick mover when it gets up here. >> that is unusual. in n

we're talking about jfk, la guardia and newark new jersey airports some all bay area flights that were heading there have been cancelled. right now we're inside terminal 2 at sfo, behind me is the american airlines check in counter and we talked to people you see in the line. some of them have still been in line for the last hour, and many of them are trying to rebook their flights and trying to find an alternate way to get to their destination. along with cancellations to new york, there are other cancellations on other east coast airports. a number of flights from sfo to boston, washington, d.c., philadelphia, even chicago, to chicago, cancelled this morning. and the airport manager says that's because that plane he believes -- supposed to fly to chicago may be stuck on the east coast because of the storm. altogether more than 40 flights out of sfo were cancelled this morning. and a lot of international travelers have been affected here since many of their flights going through cities to the east coast before crossing the atlantic. so we talked to one couple from paris who honeymoone

jfk is the same number. overall, according to flight aware.com, there have been 1500 flights today canceled. it is gorgeous outside here. it is still an issue. planes aren't here. personnel is still trickling in. overall, 12,000 flights canceled between friday through sunday night. another 1500 today. that's a record now beating some snowstorms over this past winter. if you talk about a situation like jetblue, which has a hub at jfk in new york, they have canceled 336 flights today. the key is, the planes aren't even here. they flew 50 of them out for safety before the storm. they have to get the planes back in to get capacity up to speed. i felt terrible for that woman, one woman we talked to who was on holiday from the uk. she has been stuck here for a couple of days. she was by herself. she was a little fearful for her safety. it is interesting to watch on tv when you see it. but to actually experience it, it is a terrible one. the airlines tell us, we probably won't be under normalized conditions for at

northbound in the 40s, new york city 21 miles per hour and 38 at jfk. we are starting to see the winds increase as the storm continues to track northward. it is a category 1 and holding its strength together. there is a lot of moisture with the storm. 6-12 inches expected from new england and portions of eastern virginia. localized we could get 20 inches of rain in the elivations . and it is graphic lifting and the air has no where to go but up and condenses and you get more rain. sustained winds at 80 miles per hour and moving northeast. don't focus only on the center of the storm system. you are going to feel impacts further out from the cone of unty. it will track northward and could be a category 1 at 8:00 a.m.. and that is just before landfall in western portions of long island. that will be 11:00 a.m. . this time bad conditions in new york city and long island. talking about hurricane conditions that are impacting the area. 8:00 a.m. on sunday. and storm system will continue on the northward track. by sunday at 8:00 p.m. over portions of new engla
