and i will tell you was the only place where the first question was not jfk. because if i wanted to know about lincoln's money. so when you look at him, we all know that it is a great conspiracy. one of the greatest of all time and we all know that when you look at it and you plant the seed of doubt in someone's head, it's almost impossible to onerous. you look at the warren commission 50 years ago and they looked at this and said that lee harvey oswald acted alone. in a decade later, the house house committee looks at the evidence and say that that's wrong and we didn't find three shots were fired, we found four. so i went there for the first time, which is was a fantastic trip, take your kids. the best part is i get there and of course i'm taking pictures and making a funny face and having fun. and then a minute later i'm walking and there's a family there with her cute little twin girls and if you can picture them same smile. of course -- i love judging other people. in the play, you people are taking pictures at a murder scene. i go there and it's believed

and can be invoked -- kennedy invoked the jfk tax cut and jfk foreign policy toughness, repeatedly. as he said during the 1984 campaign, whenever i talk about president kennedy, my opponents tear their hair out. and going through president bush, who also invoked kennedy for his tax cut and for his foreign policy. you know, you can argue about whether they are accurate representations or not, but i think that's part of both the greatness and the tragedy of kennedy, that even though the tragedy is that because he's not dead, we can only speculate on where he would have been on these questions. but the greatness is that everyone is still trying to figure it out 50 years later. and i think the best, the best words that capture that are actually kennedy was a great reader of poetry and there was an elegy which included the line what he was, he was. what he is slated to become depends on us your so with that, i'm happy to take your questions. [applause] [inaudible conversations] [inaudible conversations] >> jfk and the senate halfway through the president say. with the 50th anniversary of the kennedy assassination , was it a benefit to publish your book at this time or did it hurt? >> it was a mixed blessing of course, there was a tidal wave of interest but yet it's there was an avalanche of books for. it was almost a very crowded field parker the perfect world that may have come down at a different time but the book is ready to go and the publisher wanted to go now. with kennedy he seems to be interesting battle times. a character that is a compelling public official that he is hot now but five years from now so many unanswered questions about his presidency and political career he will always be popular to write about. >> we don't think of him as a senator very often. >> that is what drew the end because we always think of him as president but he was a senator for eight years and six years of the house before that. he was not a master like lyndon johnson that there really active of policy debate and discussion of vietna

is the author of "the accidental victim: jfk, lee harvey oswald, and the real target in dallas." >> andt's a rare constant in american political life. but if you look at congress in 1901, less than 2% of members came from working-class background. got into politics and that eventually wound up in congress. fast-forward to the present day. the average number of congress met less than 2% of the career doing manual labor jobs, service industry jobs. and so this is one thing that really hasn't changed, you know, different aspects of the political podcast. big money in politics and the decline of unions and while all of this is happening, there's one of the constants during the, during the ls

and your book on the letters of jfk, and one of the archivists from the jfk presidential library in boston commented to us in one of our visits year that the difference in the presidency and the correspondence over the years has changed so much in debt in the future there will be so many fewer letters for historians to look at. and i wondered if you could just kind of talk about the impact of that in the future and how much of what's being written today is actually going to be resurrected? >> it's a lost. that's all i can say, it's a loss because you're not going to have a president down the rhine -- down the line writing 40 pages. a skype. anand by the time that our grandkids are going, they will talk into the watch and you'll have a meeting instantly. who knows what it's going to be? what we can say for sure is you don't get an e-mail what's in these letters. and you don't get on twitter what's in there. plus i've written several -- i wrote three or four history books about this. we went to digital we lost a lot. it made it a lot easier but the great -- they don't say i'll take 600 pictu

that jfk actually gave her 2 -- celebrate the birth of john junior. and she wore that right after the swearing-in. and most famously, finishing the ensemble, what she wore that day. she wore that on her head so that her face could be seen, and then became a fashion trend. where the hat would normally be one -- worn on the very top of the head. but she used that to frame her face. and this is one of her best- known dresses, the dress that she wore during her televised tour of the white house in february of 1962. visitors are quite surprised to learn that this is a red dress. the program was filled in black and white and broadcast in black-and-white. she chose the color red for that program, knowing it would be televised on valentine's day, 1962. what's go into the museum and look at other examples of her clothing that we have on display. she put a lot of thought into her wardrobe, when she was represented in the country both at the white house and while traveling abroad. she talked about what colors would mean something to the country. so for her visit

i have more of a general question from your presentation it seems like jfk became a president through some kind of a predetermined pass rather than any success in the senate. would you agree with that opinion? in the success and not much for the election but it was part of the ad that he was going through the final rule. >> i do think the senate changed him and transformed him and i do think he developed expertise in areas he had not before and he did a kind of a deep dive on some complicated issues so it was like an advanced graduate school from kennedy and i think that he did use his senate years to learn more and he kind of form a political identity in which he presented himself as both a modern male politician, the young guest candidate but also someone who was very familiar with the american history and understood its traditions and was very steep in american history. so i think that he put together a very powerful political presence that was a force, but i think it does raise profound -- what are the kind of ironies about the political system seems to be that the times that you

right there at jfk, we have the air train that leaves jfk airport every day multiple times going to jamaica station. there's no operator on it. it's all computer controlled. so we need to take advantage of the automation that's available to us and apply it to our rail system in this country. >> it is something i think that will be implemented over the next few years across the country, at least in part. i'm not sure replacing the conductors and engineers on a system like metro north is what people have in mind, but they do have in mind some kind of stopgap for this positive system. talk to me about what kind of monitoring systems are now in place for the engineers, for the people who run these railroads. there's the black box, so-called black boxes, the recorders, there were two of them on this train. what about video cameras? is anyone taking pictures of what's going on inside these trains? >> not that i know of. i don't believe anybody has got a video system on board. they do review the operation of the train and there are people that ride the train, safety inspectors, if you will, to mak
