lizzy: thanks jill disis. i want to bring in jennifer zabasajja because we are staying in china but president xi jinping has attended the brics leaders dinner in south africa, but he did skip an earlier scheduled appearance at a business forum. we have been talking a lot about china's domestic problems. they have meant that the africa trip has been only xi jinping's second international trip this year. what was the read out from his meeting with the other brics leaders? jennifer: yeah, lizzy, it is not just second trip is here. this would have been his first speech made internationally overseas this year. a lot of people were anticipating and especially because of what you and jill just talked about, hearing from the chinese president during this brics business council meeting. but instead, we heard from the commerce minister. throughout the day, we saw chinese president xi jinping later on at the leaders summit. earlier we saw him meeting with south african president cyril ramaphosa, talking about the importa

but until that happens, i see very little sign that they are going to pivot back to reality. >> jill,ave a new column for the detroit news, and you argue that each of trump's trial should be televised. and i wonder, as i listen to jennifer rubin talk about the way in which this has not broken through with republican leaders, and with republican voters, to the extent to which you believe that transparency might break through to them and, in a larger sense, help preserve democracy. >> i do think so. it is not guaranteed. because we have seen they have already lost several elections because of him. and yet, they keep sticking with him. so, it is not clear that they have gotten the message yet. but i do think that there is enough republicans who will watch the trial and will be mesmerized by it and we'll see that, like richard nixon, he is a crook. and they will change their vote. so, i think it is one of the only hopes we have. and i hope the case is not removed to federal court from georgia. because, we will at least have cameras in the georgia case. but i think it is possible that chie

jill, not a whole lot to ship the narrative here. jill: no, actually not. lot of the jolts data reinforces what we know about this continued resilience for the labor market contributing to factors for a while we have pushed off a lot of the recession forecasts. the data, we saw that while hiring is falling, layoffs are also falling as well. it seems like employers are very reticent to lay off or get rid of the workers they have. they want to hold onto them. ultimately, yes, it speaks to this continued picture of strong resilience within the labor markets. the minnesota fed president kashkari and others have said as the fed works to reduce inflation and tried to get back down to the 2% limit, they are necessarily going to see a update -- uptick in employment as labor pressure needs through. resilience in the labor market is likely going to be a continued cooling in the next few months into next year but ultimately, i think we are seeing more data researching what we already know about the u.s. economy right now. lizzy: valerie, we heard from austan goolsbee,

yvonne: let's bring in jill disis. walk us through the thinking of what you are hearing on this asymmetric cut and the lack of one in the five-year. jill: i'm still getting messages on my phone from economists and analysts were puzzled over what happened today because as recently as friday we were expecting that might be the five-year rate as a reference rate for mortgages that would be a steeper cut and the one-year rate which is tied to corporate loans. i think the thinking right now appears to be that maybe the fact that these banks don't have a whole lot of room to lower the five-year rate indicates that the costs and liabilities are emergent and maybe -- armor urgent maybe there needs to be further action from the pboc to do initial cuts looking at the reserve requirement ratio cutting deposit ratios to give banks more room to adjust. average mortgage rates are really low but ultimately it seems like it is a big disappointment but there is not a lot of room for banks to do much. rishaad: what more can we expect in

jill, let certain fulton county. the news today that they've been called to testify before the grand jury next week. talk about the process, the timing, what are the final steps before they may deliver an indictment? >> and the final steps are to have all of the witnesses completed. and we are now seeing that there are some subpoenas for next week. so that means that it won't happen until at least after their testimony. but this does look like it is high-level witnesses. the lieutenant governor is going to testify on tuesday. so as early as tuesday, we could have an indictment announced and possibly unsealed in georgia. i will have to wear my peach pan when that happens. but the process is that the grand jury votes on the prepared indictment. they are shown what the laws of georgia are, and they've already heard the facts from witnesses. and they see what the facts support all the charges that are labeled as the elements of a crime, and then they vote. and that is the end of it. and that it is handed off to a judge.

jill, let me bring you and. how significant is it that this property crisis in china seems to be spreading from the private sector to the public sector? jill: the important thing to keep in mind here as we are reviewing corporate filings for 18 of 38 state-owned builders were reporting preliminary losses through the first six months of 2023, up from 11 of these companies listed in hong kong and mainland that were reporting full year losses at the end of 2022. this is telling us that the state builders are not immune from the ongoing property crisis that is coming at the same time we are on default watch for country garden, one of the nations largest property developers. evergrande defaulted a couple of years ago and it is also declaring chapter 15 bankruptcy in new york trying to protect itself from creditors as it is trying to work through potential restructuring plans. all of this comes together to show you that a property crisis that not only has been going on for the past couple of years but also is not show

let's bring in jill to break down the earnings. you are a disney reporter veteran, so we have to talk about it. most of the positivity was around cost and reduction of costs i should say, is that fair? jill: there is a couple things investors looking at that is positive for earnings read it is that 3 billion dollars in cost savings disney flagged. they were expecting to spend $30 billion on content this year, now it is somewhere around $27 billion. a big part of that is due to the actor and writer strikes in hollywood, and they have to move projects to a different time, helping them save money for now. the other thing to flag is if you look at some of their online video losses, they are doing better than initially expected. this is the direct to consumer division losing $500 million this fiscal quarter. that's a lot better than a year ago, when losses were at $1 billion, but it is better than initial projections for losses of $750 million. a lot of that is presenting promised because when you are looking at streaming and dtc for di
