i want to bring in jill dougherty from ireland where the secretary of state hillary clinton held a newsonference. keep in mind, russia here, really, resisted the efforts to speed the departure of the syrian leader al assad. so jill, do we know, was syria's chemical weapons, was that discussed here in this conversation between the secretary of state and the foreign minister of russia? >> reporter: well, yes. initially. there are actually two meetings between secretary clinton and the foreign minister. and you know, russia actually does -- this is one area where they do agree. russia is very much opposed to any type of use of chemical weapons and in fact secretary clinton thanked him for speaking about that which she did in brussels just yesterday, talking about that. although, brooke, you know, you have to say that the russians next breath say that they have raised that issue, in fact, with bashar al assad. the president of syria. and he assures them that there's no use intended and it is not a problem and, so, you kind of have two messages coming from the russians but you would have to

let's go to our foreign affairs correspondent jill dougherty. what are you learning, jill? >> well, u.s. military satellites are tracking those missiles and a u.s. official tells cnn that literally within the last few days four missiles were fired from damascus north towards turkey. they didn't go over the border but this official says they got close. the fighting in syria grows more vicious. troops loyal to bashar al assad reach into their arsenal for more deadly weapons. even scud missile. officials say assad has between 3 and 400 of those short and medium-range missiles in his stockpile. the regime forces launched a scud from the suburbs of damascus. >> if this proves to be true, it's another indication of the deparagraph tea of assad and his crohn knees. >> once more, the forces last week started using what's called barrel bombs. >> it contains flammable materials. it's sort of a napalm and it's very, very concerning and indicative of the regime's brutality. >> human rights groups say it causes extremely painful burns, often down to the bone, burns that are often hard t

jill dougherty is joining us. hi, jill. >> hi, don.me is john kerry, a heavyweight in foreign policy and maybe it's funny that he looks like a secretary of state with that gray hair, very tall, distinguished but more seriously, he does know the issues. he's been involved in these issues -- world issues for a long time. he's kind of a surrogate for the administration, including being kind of an unofficial envoy on afghanistan and pakistan. and the ties to mr. obama go way back. you could say go back to the 2004 election when senator kerry took barack obama on the map by giving him a chance to speak at the convention. so that's one factor. i think you would say that he's a very likely candidate nobody thinks that he'll have any trouble sailing through in the senate. >> and after all, john mccain did say -- did call him and jokingly he said, mr. secretary, when they were in the middle of a conference recently. so chans are that he may -- he may go through without any problem. >> yes. although, ironically, remember back in 2004 when he was

. >> jill dougherty joins us now by phone from brussels. she is traveling with the secretary. jill, that warning begs a question. the u.s. has actually spoken of the move of chemical weaponry before, but this, officials are saying, is different. tell us why. >> well, it's different because the intelligence information that is coming out, the data, shows moving apparently these weapons or supplies, and they have done that before, but the way they are doing them, it's different, and it's kind of a new activity, i guess you could call it, which might indicate some type of move toward deploying the weapons. it's a little murky, of course, right there. you heard secretary clinton not wanting to get into intelligence issues, as you can imagine, but there is a heightened concern, and that is one of the reasons that when she was asked about it during this brief -- during this presser in prague, she was very, very serious in her response. >> yeah. no. i heard earlier that they tend to keep the chemical -- the chemicals separate from the delivery systems, the rockets, the mortars, and i

our foreign affairs correspondent jill dougherty is joining us now. dr. also standing by. but let's start with you, jill. what else do we know about the secretary's condition right now? >> well, wolf, this came -- this announcement by the doctors who treat secretary clinton came at the end of a long day of speculation about where precisely that blood clot is located. there was speculation it might have been in her leg, but the state department was not saying. finally at the end of the day, they released the statement. i will read part to you. the doctors of secretary clinton say it's a clot in the vein that's situated in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. it did not result in a stroke or neurological damage. to help dissolve this clot, they began treating the secretary with blood thinners. she will be released once the medication dose has been established. and then they add, in all other aspects of her recovery, the secretary is making excellent progress and we are confident she will make a full recovery. she is in good spirits

jill dougherty is following this live for us at the state department. this is a first, correct?n regime is doing this. >> yes, though i have to tell you, brooke, that there have been reports, you know, coming from the state department that as i say the lethality of the weapons that the syrian regime has been using against the forces, the opposition forces, has been increasing. and in fact in the briefing today they were talking about missiles, the spokesperson, victoria newland, wouldn't go so far as to call them scuds, however sources that we're talking to are calling them scuds, but she also mentioned another thing that is very disturbing, and that is what are called barrel bombs. that's another thing. they are incendiary bombs. they set off fires and create burns that human rights groups say are extremely painful, can burn right down to the bone, and is very, very hard, especially from people who don't have hospitals or health care at this point to be treated for it. so this is, as we know, coming right on the heels of those reports just a week or so ago about chemical weapon

jill dougherty is at the state department with more this morning. what do you have for us, jill?know, the significance of this really is that with the gains that the rebels are making, these are lethal weapons, the scuds. that's a sign, as they have been making grounds, that the regime of bashar al assad is taking more and more serious weapons, more lethal weapons to counter that. these were fired towards the north, towards the turkish border. it was pointed out they came close, but they didn't go over the border. that's significant because, remember, just last week, nato approved patriot missile -- anti-missile defenses that will be installed in turkey. and that, the united states will be doing, so will germany an the dutch. finally, another point to this, as we were talking with experts, you can put chemical weapons on scuds. that apparently has not been done but that was a concern. remember, just a week or two ago about the chemical weapons. so far it's conventional, but that's another worrisome thing. >> all right, jill dougherty, thank. >>> we have new numbers out from the u

cnn's jill dougherty is live in our washington bureau.nd i have been talking closely this morning, but have you learned any more about her condition or anything from her doctors? >> reporter: no, we've been asking, but so far no updates. the state department had a statement sunday night. we're hoping we'll get something new. at this point, it would appear they're really just watching very carefully to see how those anti- anti-coagulants, what kind of effect they have on her. it's been a rough couple of weeks, first the flu, and then the concussion, and now this. it's especially worrisome when you have a secretary of state who's traveled now almost 1 million miles by air, and they've put that on hold, any type of travel on hold for at least another couple of weeks. right now i can't imagine that she is going to be doing much of anything travel-wise. the big issue for the secretary, when she came back -- she was supposed to come back -- was the hearing, a couple of hearings on capitol hill about benghazi, and the state department said she w

jill dougherty is our state correspondent. it looks potentially like john kerry could be the man that you'll be covering in the weeks and months to come, john kerry, chairman of the foreign relations committee, democratic presidential nominee back in 2004. what are you hearing? >> well, obviously now that susan rice is out of the picture, it would be very logical to turn to him. he is well known for international affairs. every type of issue he seems to have a statement ready within seconds. he's a heavyweight. he knows all of the issues. he wouldn't have the difficulty, it would appear, in the senate for being confirmed with that post as susan rice would have. and it also clears the way now for secretary clinton to move on to her next venture because don't forget until that process of guesting somebody in that place was over and now if it's a smoother sailing, then she could leave after the inauguration and that would be a lot easier for her. the other thing on the time, the accountability on which susan rice made those comme
