cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger joins us with some possible solutions for people that have um, how did it get so out of control, jill? good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you know, the economy has really changed over the last 25 years. it's now clear that college graduates earn a lot more over the course of their careers than those who don't have college educations. so a lot of americans said i got to get that degree. to do so, many had to borrow. today about 7 in 10 graduating seniors come out of college with nearly $30,000 in debt. of course, the amount of student debt and the likelihood of graduating with debt varies greatly between states and colleges. >> a lot of borrowers are having a hard time repaying. what should they do, jill? >> reporter: a lot is underplaying it. 20% of student borrowers are in default right now. over 11% are delinquent. that means they are more than 90 days late with their payment. i think a lot of these borrowers should consider whether consolidation could make sense for them. consolidation streamlines repayment and can often reduce your

. >>> in today's jobs report jill schlesinger looks at whether an advanced degree really pays off. >>> reporter: if you're thinking about whether or not to continue your education beyond an undergrad degree, consider this. the national unemployment rate stood at 5.6% through the end of 2014. but those who completed a bachelor's degree or higher were in better shape with a rate of just 2.9%. those with master's degrees had an unemployment rate of 2.2% and those with a doctorate had a 1% unemployment rate. but not all advance degrees are created equal. pay scale.com ranged mid career salaries and projected employment growth. topping the list was physician assistants studies with a median salary of $97,500. and a 38% projected job growth rate over the next decade. those with engineering degrees earned over $100,000 by mid career. and an advance degree in political science could be worth $94,000 by mid career in a field which is likely to grow by 21%. the census bureau says 10.7% of california residents hold advance degrees. and now the big question, are you ready to write that thesis? i'

jill schlesinger take as look at how you can protect yourself this tax season. >>reporter: every year the irs compiles a dirty dozen list of tax scams that americans may encounter. in addition to electronic hoaxes where some may unknowingly turn over personal information to criminals, to fake calls from fraudsters who try to get you to pay money you don't owe, the irs is reminding us that some of of the most common scams are those which are the most personal, unscreupuallows tax practitioners who promise outlandish refunds. to protect yourself the agency suggests you only work with someone who has an irs preparer tax identification number. that certifies that the person is authorized to prepare federal tax returns. don't use someone who bases his or her fee on the size of your refund. guard against falling prey to people who encouraging you to claim deductions or credits to which you are not entitled, and avoid preparers who don't ask to see your records and receipts. remember, never sign a blank or incomplete return and always have your refund sent directly to

joining us with more cbs business analyst jill schlesinger.res from a lot of fads diets. what's happened? >> weight watchers hasn't kept up with the online technical revolution of weight loss. you can count your calories and keep track of things wearable gadgets like the fit bit lets you track your exercise and really, weight watchers has had a hard time coming up with an answer to that. it costs money and these other things are actually free. >> is it a future, can they weather this storm? >> obviously, weight watchers is a huge category. what differentiated weight watchers are the meetings. you pay for the meetings, it's like a support group. it's a terrific environment. weight watchers rely on half its revenue from those meetings. attendance has now started to slide a little bit. weight watchers is trying to change its message. >> with this new marketing strategy? in they hired. >> they hired a new guy about six months ago. it's no longer beautiful stars that have lost a lot of weight. it's now you take control we're here to try to help. on

cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger joins us to fill us in on the possible adjustments. so what are the new rules? >> reporter: well, they would require brokers to work with their clients on retirement accounts like your ira, ira rollovers that they would have to act in a customer's best interest. this is a fiduciary duty. you come before your broker or that person's firm. so the rule change is intended to crackdown on what the administration calls back door payments and hidden fees. they say that this costs retirement savers $18 to $17 billion a year. >> sounds good. what's the problem. >> reporter: i know this sounds crazy but the sec is raising a red flag. they are concerned, they say department of labor's contention that the industry is plagued by conflicts of interest has not been proven. they also say the new rules would effectively overhaul all of the regulatory regime that's been in place for 80 years. and i think this is interesting because they say, this could limit small investor access to qualified investment advice and products. the reason being that a lot o
