the national average is now $2.07 for a regular gallon of gas, but as jill wagner reports drivers in country are paying a lot more than others. >> reporter: recent college graduate says every time she fills up her gas tank lately it costs less. gas prices have fallen by more than a dollar from a year ago. >> i'm saving 20 30 bucks. yeah, it's really good. >> she pays more than drivers in texas or new jersey. >> prices can vary significantly from place to place. >> reporter: there are several reasons why gas prices can vary from state to state. aaa says more than half of the cost is for crude oil. add to that the federal gas tax, 18.4 cents a gallon. and then state taxes. new jersey and alaska have the low evidence chld hawaii, pennsylvania, and new york have some of the highest. drivers also pay for transportation and shipping which is why americans living near oil refineries which turn the crude into usable gasoline will pay a lot less at the gas pump. >> if you live along the u.s. gulf coast you find your prices cheapest. >> now we just have to keep it this way, right? >> keep it t

and that usually means good news for wall street jill wagner... of cbs moneywatch dot-com.lobal markets close higher today and that usually -- most global markets close higher today and that usually means good news for the money markets. jill wagner of cbsmoneywatch.com joins us. >> reporter: we'll see if investors can stop the sell- off. this has been the worst start to a year for the markets since the great recession. dow down 130 points yesterday. that comes after monday's 330 point drop. the nasdaq fell 59 points. so what's behind this? mostly it's the falling price of crude oil. energy companies like exxonmobil and chevron have taken a hit. there is a silver lining to all this. low gas prices. a gallon of regular could average $2.64 this year which is well below 2014's average of $3.334 according to gasbuddy.com. >>> tech companies have promised to diversify their workforce and now intel will spend $300 million on engineering scholarships at historically black schools and also increase the number of women, blacks and hispanics as employees by 14%. frank and michelle? >

jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. ood morning, jill. >> good morning, lauren. oil prices continue to slide. this time there were comments by the united emirates energy minister. u.s. crude was down 18 cents to $45.89 a barrel. brent crude for international oil prices dropped. the dow fell 27 points. the s&p ended down 5 points. and the nasdaq slipped 3 points. >>> chipotle has stopped served pork at a third of its restaurants. the fast food chain said its supplier violated its standards. it's unclear what the problems are but chipotle demands that pigs are raised in humane conditions. chipotle doesn't know when the issue will be resolved. >>> apple is going after gopro. they were going after a wearable camera. the patent cites specific weakness in gopro cameras. the apple camera like gopro can be mounted on bike helmets or scuba wear. the marketing pitches that the smaller cans and bottles contain fewer calories and less guilt but it comes at a price. a regular 12-ounce can sells on average 31 cents compared to 41 cent

. >> jill wagner looks at why prices are varying so much from state to state. actually goes into the cost of gas? >> reporter: recent college graduate says every time she fills up her gas tank lately it costs less. gas prices have fallen by more than a dollar a gallon from a year ago. >> i'm saving 20, $30, it's really good. >> she pays more in new york than drivers in states like texas, oklahoma, or even new jersey just a few miles away. >> prices can vary really pretty significantly from place to place and a lot of that can cause consumer confusion. >> there are several reasons why gas prices can vary from state to state. >> triple a says more than half of the cost is for crude oil. add to that the federal gas tax, 18.4 cents a gallon and then state taxes. new jersey and alaska have the lowest. hawaii, pennsylvania and new york have some of the highest. drivers also pay for transportation and shipping which is why americans living near oil refineries which turn the crude into useable gasoline will pay a lot less at the gas pump. >> along the coast gas prices

jill wagner of cbsmoneywatch.com joins us on this friday morning. jill. >> reporter: good morning, frank and michelle. it was a rough start to 2015 but the markets opened today in positive territory for the year. the dow soared 323 points yesterday. the nasdaq was up 86. now, the december jobs report was another good one of the the labor department just released that report. it found that 252,000 jobs were created in december which makes 2014 the best year for hiring since 1999. the unemployment rate dropped from 5.8% to 5.6%. but earnings fell which means americans are back at work but aren't making more money. >>> speaking of jobs, about 16% of americans say getting a new one is their new year's resolution. a career builder survey also finds about 42% of people want to save more. there are some other resolutions. be less stressed and eat healthier at work. the number one perk that people say they want, half a day fridays. frank and michelle? >> we love friday. >>> well, we love sweets, too . >>> sleep number has rolled out a new smart bed for kids.
