and some people ask me, what happened to jim? let me tell you what happened to jim. jim felt that the country is not going to change without somebody making it change. so it was out of a sense of frustration that you had to do things sometimes almost by yourself, and i'm here to tell you you changed things and we appreciate the hell out of it. your leaving the senate is going to be tough, it's going to be -- together we were able to put south carolina on the map sometimes, whether they wanted to or not, but i've really enjoyed the experience of taking the issues of our day, whether it be at home or in washington, and try to push the envelope. so when you leave, jim, i want you to realize that all of us understand, particularly over the last four years, you took the road less traveled in washington, and it is not your nature to be the only voice. and the fact that you were willing to do it shows me how much you care about our country, our state and you will be someone who will be listened to because of what you've done for the last four years. and we're better off for

i think that jim is a very principled guy. i never agreed with a single one of his principles, but he's a very principled guy. he is doing what he thinks he needs to do in order to further his cause. he has had some real serious problems with his relationships in the senate. i think all of us who practice politics know that if you're going to be successful in any legislative body, you have to develop relationships with people and people have to feel comfortable knowing that you are going to be a certain place at a certain time. i don't think that anybody in the senate ever felt comfortable where jim demint was on any of the issues, and he had a lot of strained relationships within his own party over there. so i think he'll be much more comfortable outside of the body and over at the heritage foundation where he can pontificate, and as we say down here, he can preach to the choir. >> well, he'll do a pretty good job of that. he has in the past. eugene robinson, this is very unusual that someone would give up a senate seat to do

i'm jim axelrod. a lot of holiday plans are out the window tonight due to a powerful storm system that stranded travelers on highways and at airports. it's blamed in at least six deaths. in the south, there are reports that 41 tornadoes have touched down since yesterday. one of them sheered off the front of the trinity episcopal church in mobile, alabama. luckily, no one was injured. the same system brought a blizzard to parts of the midwest, forcing the cancellation of more than 1,400 flights. tonight, it's headed to the northeast. winter storm warnings have already been posted. troy kehoe of our cbs station in indianapolis begins our coverage. troy? >> reporter: well, jim, here in bloomington, indiana, we've already seen 11.5 inches of snow so far, and it is still coming down with blizzard conditions here in the midwest. this has been a two-day storm leaving much of the country paralyzed. blinding snow with wind gusts topping 35 miles an hour have created whiteout conditions in the plains in midwest

this is jim demint. jim demint was re-elected senator for south carolina not this past election, 2012, but in 2010. you might remember he was the guy who had the good fortune in 2010 to be running against a young man named alvin green on the democratic side. it was not a hotly contested race. mr. demint won by 34 points. and that freed him up to spread a bunch of his own campaign cash and his own energy that year on other campaigns and other candidates that he favored. and that has been the way that jim demint has built his influence in politics. he has treated all of his time in the u.s. senate not as an opportunity to get anything passed. he has no legislative record at all. he spent his time in the senate trying to become a kingmaker, trying to make the republican party over in his own image. trying to shape other people's races. to have more conservative litmus tests for republican candidates. so jim demint was elected for the first time in '04. he was re-elected in 2010. they serve six-year terms. r
