jim acosta has latest. >> reporter: president obama is expected to shed light on winding down the war in afghanistan. he will do that with the meeting with president ghani. president obama had said he would slash the current number of u.s. troops in afghanistanstanafghanistan by half. from 10,000 to 5,000 by the end of this year with a total withdraw by the end of 2016. ghani wants president obama to reconsider. while they are looking at the pace of the u.s. pullout, the plan is to have a small number of troops in afghanistan as president obama leaves office. here is what josh earnest had to say about that. >> we are talking in the neighborhood of 1,000 to 1,500 troops. at this point, the u.s. troop presence is around 10,000 in afghanistan. the question is how much flexibility is there in the drawdown between where we stand today and that end point in 2017. >> reporter: the white house has high hopes for afghanistan's president. ghani is well known in washington. he once worked for the world bank and lived in the d.c. suburbs. christine. >> thanks jim. >>> let's get an early start on

our senior white house correspondent, jim acosta is getting reaction. how furious are they over there, jim? >> reporter: they're furious with bibi netanyahu, no question about i. there is strong pushback from this administration to the prime minister's speech. and they really are offering up a rebuttal almost point by point throughout this speech they're saying without this deal that they're trying to reach with the iranians that tehran would be really on the path to developing a nuclear weapon. they also say that even military action would only curtail their program for a fraction of the time that this deal would offer. they're saying that that is another point that is in their favor. another thing that they're saying is that just because they're talking to the iranians doesn't mean that they're trying to normalize relations with the regime in tehran and saying that they don't trust the iranians. if this deal is put into place, there will be a monitoring regime that is put in place to make sure the iranians are living up to their end of the bargain. but

jim acosta is there in the east room of the white house. jim, set the stage for us. >> that's right, wolf. as you mentioned just a few moments ago, the white house indicating there will be some news in this news concerns coming up in just a few minutes. the president will announce that he has decided after meeting with the new afghan president, ashraf ghani, that he will be keeping approximately 9800 u.s. troops in afghanistan. that's the number that is currently there right now. the plan had originally been for the president to draw down that number to about 5500 u.s. troops and then totally withdrawal nearly all u.s. forces by the end of 2016 as he ends his presidency. what the white house is saying at this point is now the president will start looking at just how quickly that draw down will occur in the course of 2016. the president coming out now. we'll hear other issues coming up including the issue of the relations between the u.s. and israel. >> the presidents are walking in now. >> good afternoon, everybody. please have a seat. befor

jim acosta joins us on the phone. >> reporter: anderson on monday i guess which was yesterday, an envelope was received at the white house mail screening facility which is something that's been set up for many, many years, to screen mail coming in to the white house for just these sorts of situations. accords to the u.s. secret service they did an initial biological testing on the nfl. that envelope. but earlier today they did testing on this envelope and returned what they're calling a presumptive positive for cyanide. then that sample was transported to another facility to confirm the results. and at this point the secret service is saying this is an ongoing investigation. they don't have any additional comment at this time. but we have heard from a law enforcement official in the last half our there were no injuries or exposure concerns for the person at the sorting facility who opened this letter. again, with all the questions that are going on with the secret service, this is an example of when they do catch something and they do perform their duty and something is found in time to pr
