let's go to our chief white house correspondent, jim acosta. jim, you're getting some behind the scenes information about the level of concern over at the white house over the way senator collins would vote. but they must be very happy right now. >> reporter: they are very happy. we understand the president was watching, and he's also happy, and so we're waiting to find out what the president says in terms of weighing in on all of this. but wolf, make no mistake. they were holding their breath during susan collins' speech there in the senate, just a short time ago. i was talking to a gop source familiar with the nomination process, talking about how the mood was on the gop side of the senate judiciary committee, inside team kavanaugh, inside the white house. and this is what the source said, wolf. it's very interesting. the source said, we were on the edge of our seats. signs were good, but you never take those for granted until it's announced. we were thinking it shouldn't have been this close. and so, wolf, this just gets to how starting this

first let's go to our chief white house correspondent jim acosta. m, you were in the room as the white house tried to spin the president's mocking of christine blasey ford. >> reporter: that's right, wolf. they were trying to tell us that up is down and black is white. the white house is not only defending president trump's obvious mocking of christine blasey ford, aides to the president are telling the falsehood that the president wasn't mocking her to begin with. it is just the latest example, wolf, of the white house playing fast and loose with the facts. it was a stunning moment. with a crowd of supporters laughing along, president trump incredibly mocked christine blasey ford, the accuser who says supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh assaulted her. >> how did you get home? i don't remember. how did you get there? i don't remember. where is the place? i don't remember. how many years ago was it? i don't know, i don't know. i don't know! i don't know! what neighborhood was it in? i don't know. where's the house? i don't know. upstairs, downstairs

our chief white house correspondent, jim acosta, was in the briefing room. i wondered what you made of sarah sanders' responses, jim? >> reporter: well, wianderson, you heard, the press secretary did say that the president and the first lady will be heading to pittsburgh tomorrow to remember the victims of the tree of life synagogue massacre. but then it got pretty contentious, as you saw, in that briefing. members of the press, including myself, were trying to press sarah on some of the president's rhetoric, which the white house doesn't want to take any responsibility for. they're obviously pushing back on the notion that the president's rhetoric has anything to do with any of these violent acts we've seen over the last week. at one point, sarah sanders said that we and the press were blaming the president for these acts, which i don't think is the case. i suppose there might be some individuals out there who are blaming the president directly for these attacks. but i think what has been said, by cnn and other news outlets, is that the president's rhetoric

jim acosta, thank you very much. now to the extraordinary west wing shouting match between the national security adviser john bolton and white house chief of staff john kelly. let's bring in our white house correspondent kaitlan collins who is doing a lot of reporting on this. what set these two guys off? >> reporter: it got really ugly, talking about a recent surge in border cross, something that has infuriated president trump because he's been tweeting about it and it got really ugly between john bolton and john kelly where it startled other people in the west wing. that's not normal. a lot of fighting in this white house, it's bitter and divisive and this is more dramatic than that and someone equated it as a falling out. they were talking about the surge in borders crossings, and really what set john kelly off is when john bolton, the national security adviser, criticized the dhs secretary kirstjen nielsen. now she is a protege of john kelly's. he brought her when he became chief of staff to the white house for a

our jim acosta joins us from the white house with that. so you were in the east room just now for the ceremonial swearing-in. i'm just wondering what it was like in the room. >> reporter: well, anderson, it was a fascinating thing to watch. obviously you don't get to see living supreme court justices there in the flesh in the east room of the white house, so that obviously lets you know that history is in the making here. anderson, one of the big questions going into tonight's ceremony over at the white house is whether or not we were going to hear fire and fury or fence meddling. really we got both. anderson, i think probably the more striking thing of the night is seeing mitch mcconnell receive not one but two standing ovations. he was as much the man of the hour and he was the one that blocked merrick garland from being put on the supreme court when barack obama was president and essentially delivered this moment to president trump on a silver platter. >> and for days the president has not been shying away from a very strong defense of

jim acosta is at the white house. what did the president say? >> reporter: he was down in florida and georgia taking a look at the storm damage. he was asked about the latest report from cnn and from others that this was the result potentially of a botched interrogation, that jamal khashoggi died as a result of an interrogation that went wrong. the president, as you noted earlier today, was saying that perhaps rogue killers were to blame for all of this. he was much more careful in the way he responded to this question about the latest reports on all of this and here's what he had to say earlier tonight. >> i'm going to have to see what they say and we're working very closely with saudi arabia and with turkey and they're working together to figure out what happened. and they want to know what happened also. so a lot of people are working on it, a lot of people. and we'll be bound very much by that. we'll see. i've heard that report. nobody knows if it's an official report. so far it's the rumor. the rumor report coming in. >> reporter: and, ande

this new reporting and all these new developments are being received at the white house, cnn's jim acosta is for for us tonight. jim, the president tweeting and talking about jamal khashoggi a lot today. what's the latest? >> that's right, anderson. perhaps the most profound thing that happened today in terms of how the white house was responding to all of this is when the president spoke with the a.p. earlier this afternoon. and the president was asked about what he thinks in terms of how the saudis have handled all this, and the president is essentially leaping to the defense of the saudi kingdom, saying here we go again. in his words to the associated press, with you're guilty until proven innocence. the president went on to say, anderson, during that interview with the a.p. that he sees the saudis as sort of the same way he sees his supreme court nominee, now justice brett kavanaugh who faced allegations of sexual assault. the president essentially saying that the saudis can relate to brett kavanaugh, however you're supposed to make sense of that, i suppose that's up to the viewer, bu

it could be undone tonight. >> jim acosta, thank you. let's go to capitol hill where we're told republican senator susan collins of maine is reading the fbi report in that secure room. our senior congressional correspondent manu raju is at the capital. how do we expect this key republican? there are a few key republican senators who are still technically undecided to vote. >> we don't know yet i caught up with susan collins and i said do you have any new concerns? she said, quote, i'm not going to draw conclusions before i'm finished reading. this is after she made positive remarks saying it appeared she had don a thorough investigation breaking significantly from democrats who said it was not a thorough investigation. susan collins doesn't think so. also jeff flake, that other key republican said something similar. he said he agreed to there appeared to be a thorough investigation and suggested that jeff flake also said it was nothing to corroborate those allegation allegations. when we caught up with lisa murkowski of alaska she was no

jim acosta, thank you. let's dig deeper on the saudi crisis. our chief national security correspondent, jim sciutto, and josh campbell is joining us. former fbi supervisory special agent. used to work international murder investigations with the bureau. josh, you're there, you're in turkey for us. what's the latest, first of all, on the investigation? >> reporter: hi, wolf. it's just past midnight here in istanbul, here in front of the saudi consulate. the scene of the alleged crime. and the investigation here very much continues. we are getting that new reporting you mentioned earlier, very gruesome reporting indicating that journalist jamal khashoggi, was dismembered, hearing that from a turkish official, following his death. very devastating for his family, co-workers. this is one scene. there was another facility that's now become of interest and that is the residence of the consulate general, the person who leads the saudi consulate. we're told he's no longer in the country. he has departed turkey, presumably for saudi arabia. but it's that
