jim acosta, i understand you have new reporting, jim, about just how much the president's tweet yesterday to this moment we're seeing today. >> i talked to a source familiar with the planning right now who said this was essentially spontaneous, the president tweeting that he wanted to the meet with kim jong un. i talked to a law enforcement source a short while ago. he said that the secret service had, in fact, being planning for the possibility of the president going to the dmz. this is not something he can do at the last 1eb8gd. there is so much planning and preparation that has to go into a visit like this. the secret service has been conducting that for some time now. just to jump off of what you were saying moments ago about this visit. i think the president is trying to continue the conversations in hanoi. those negotiations broke apart very suddenly. we were supposed to have a press conference with the president late in the day. then that press conference got moved up by hours because things had just completely fallen apart. as the president and his team described to reporters, kim

jim acosta has been traveling with the president. it was interesting in the moment so far up here at the border as the president prepares to meet kim, i counted three or four times where the president took a swipe at the press, claiming he's not getting the credit he deserves for the outcome of these talks so far. not unusual approach for this president, even as he prepares for such an unprecedented moment. >> that's right, jim. you heard the president there speaking a few moments ago in full view of the camera saying after his first summit with kim jong un in singapore "the danger went away." of course the danger did not go away but he's made these sort of statements, posted these kind of tweets ever since the meeting with kim jong un in singapore last year. the critics and fact checkers have pointed out that that's not the case. he continues to say it. you get the sense that the president is sort of gathering this grievance with him that he doesn't get enough credit for where things stand with north korea right now. as his critics

jim acosta is with the president in japan. what's the president saying, jim? he is facing as the supreme court has blocked the citizenship question in the 2020 census. i've just learned in the last few minutes that democratic committees in the house are holding a conference call discussing whether or not the president can delay the census. tonight president trump has more to worry about the g-20, more like 2020, as the supreme court rejected the administration's move to insert a citizenship question into the upcoming census. the president now wants to know if he can indefinitely delay the census, tweeting in the middle of the night, it seems totally ridiculous our government, instead our country cannot ask a basic question. i've asked the lawyers if they can delay the census until the united states of supreme court is given additional information. chief justice john roberts wasn't buying it, saying the sole stated reasons seems to have been contrived. critics expect the moves was partially aimed at ' -- joe biden tweeted -- make no mistake the trump administra

joining me now live from osaka japan, jim acosta.most like the bachelor about to present a rose to somebody. is it possible the president is actually, you know, thinking he'll just -- go to the border and just to say hi to kim jong-un? >> reporter: anderson, the president himself has talked about this as being a love affair between himself and kim jong-un and just a short while ago he told reporters he was putting feelings about meeting with kim jong-un. i talked to a senior white house official who said there's nothing more on this other than what the president has tweeted out. but, anderson, keep in mind earlier this week, he was talking to the hill newspaper and suggested the possibility of having a brief encounter with kim jong-un. the white house asked the hill not to report that for security concerns. it seems something is very much in the works at this point. but they don't want to talk about that. i suppose for security reasons, either the president did tweet about that possibility, anderson. >> the president is meeting with

cnn's chief white house correspondent jim acosta is with us from seoul, south korea. jim, what a place to be after that incredible moment we just watched again. tell us how people in seoul are reacting. it was just a year ago when the south korean president took those same steps. >> that's right, ana. i think the reaction right now in south korea here in seoul is cautious optimism. they've seen this movie before. they've seen president trump and kim jong-un get together on two previous occasions. but as you were just mentioning a few moments ago, those previous encounters did not produce any tangible results. so we saw the same thing yesterday, you know, overnight, i suppose for you, back in the states, ana. the president is capable of orchestrating some remarkable television. the question is whether or not moving forward the president and kim jong-un can actually sit down and hammer out some sort of agreement that results in the denuclearization of this peninsula. and that is the brass ring that has not been quite grasped by this president yet. and so what we saw yest

jim acosta, here's a question for you.he president presented this possibility, floated this idea to the world in a tweet yesterday, and the machinery of north korea and the u.s. moving very quickly for a meeting that normally would take months of advance planning in just 24 hours and now this meeting's going to happen. to your knowledge was there any preplanning, was there any prediscussion between the two sides of this meeting the president tweets and 24 hours later, those two meet? >> reporter: jim, you know, i think we're still waiting to find out what the details are, what the tictoc is in terms of this planning. we do know if there is a tea leaf to be read in all of this, jim, we do know that the president was talking up this prospect earlier in the week. he had the sit down interview with the hill newspaper back in washington where he talked about this idea of meeting kim jong un at the border, according to one of the reporters with the hill who conducted this interview, the white house at that point -- this was not

live to chief white house correspondent jim acosta, covering the president over the g 20 summit in japan. jim, the president has a lot on his plate but is busy tweeting about his loss in washington at the high court. >> reporter: that's right, wolf. after arriving at the g 20, he is facing major political defeat. the supreme court bloksd the attempt to place a citizenship question in the upcoming census. the president is questioning whether he can delay the census, setting up potentially another constitutional showdown. we learned this afternoon that house democrats are talking about what should be done to make sure the president doesn't mess with the census. tonight, president trump has more to worry about than just the g 20, it is more like 2020. they rejected his move to put a citizenship question in the upcoming sense us, that could have a big impact on next year's election. the president wants to know if he can indefinitely delay the census, something the constitution won't allow. tweeting seems totally ridiculous our government and country can't ask a basic question of citizenship.

cnn's jim acosta joins us now with what his sources are telling him. jim, what are you learning about all of the fall-out surrounding the abc news interview? >> reporter: yeah, john, sources telling me and abby phillip, my colleague, that essentially people inside the white house and outside the white house close to the president feel that mr. trump mishandled these questions coming from abc about whether or not he would accept foreign dirt on a political opponent in the upcoming 2020 campaign. one source told me earlier today that these clips coming from abc have been, quote, tough to watch, and they essentially feel at this point the president did try to clean this up but there has been some lasting damage. they're not exactly sure how much damage was done, but there was some lasting damage from what the president said. he clearly invited foreign governments to turn over damaging information on political opponents in that interview. as you were just playing a few moments ago, he sort of cleared it up but left a lot of collusion confusion because in th
