i'm jim acosta in washington. we begin with a big win for donald trump in the crucial battle ground state of florida last night, republicans in that state scrapped their own loyalty pledge which mandated that candidates support the party's eventual nominee. a promise trump has refused to make. a move by the gop is seen as a major defeat for his closest rival in his home state, ron desantis. it's seen as a big win for trump in that state. this come as another key battle, prosecutors are asking for a limited gag order on trump in the election interference case. the order would prevent trump from making statements that could be considered, quote, disparaging and inflammatory or intimidating. for the latest on the republican situation, a key event is happening this evening. what do you expect to hear from the candidates tonight? >> reporter: we have a few thousand iowa republican activists who are here to see their field of candidates with the exception of the front runner, donald trump. you mentioned his legal woes.

i'm jim acosta. it is a busy evening on capitol hill. over the last several hours, lawmakers have dramatically backed away from the brink of a big government shutdown. we're not out of the woods yet. with surprising speed and bipartisanship, the house passed a stop-gap spending measure that would fund the government for the next 45 days. the white house has signaled the president will sign it. first it has to get through the senate and that vote may have hit a delay. manu raju is following all of this on capitol hill. i was hoping that it would not be sunset by the time you were able to go home this evening but it seems like that's not the case. you can't count on that on capitol hill. there may be a bit of a wrinkle in the senate in terms of getting to the finish line. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right. this is about the issue of ukraine. this bill that is waiting for a final senate approval that got approved in the house to avoid a shutdown does not include emergency aid for ukraine. the senate was trying to get that appr

i'm jim acosta. at any minute the united states senate could vote on a stop-gap measure to prevent the shutdown that was going to take place just after midnight. this afternoon the house passed an 11th hour short-term spending bill. now it has to be signed by the senate and then signed by the president. all within the next six hours. manu raju is on capitol hill for us. i guess it's on the senate side right now, and that's where you are, if memory serves me correct. you're tracking the latest. what do we know at this point? >> reporter: yeah, i've been talking to them this afternoon and it's very clear. the senate will accept and will vote to give final approval in this house bill that would keep the government open past midnight for another 45 days. it would include money to help deal with natural disasters but does not include what many senators on both sides of the aisle wanted. $6.2 billion in aid to ukraine. the senate was voting on its own plan as the house was dealing with its own drama. but a

i'm jim acosta in washington. we begin with the breaking news and the surprise outcome of a republican versus republican political fight in the state of texas. attorney general ken paxton is thanking his supporters and slamming what he calls the sham impeachment proceeding against him. just a few hours ago the state senate voted to acquit paxton on 16 charges of abusing his office to help a donor. the attorney general says now that the, quote, truth has prevailed he will get back to work defending the constitutional rights of texans, so he says. ed lavandera joins me from the texas state house in austin. ed, tell us more. >> reporter: hey, jim. the last few hours as reaction has been pouring in reacting to the acquittal of attorney general ken paxton, it is exposing what can probably only be described as an all-out civil war between various factions of the republican party here in texas. as we've mentioned just a short while ago, ken paxton was acquitted by the majority of republican senators in the texas senate o
