and how this whole thing unfolded. cory. >> reporter: well, doreen and jim, we have been checking in with police every hour. just got off the phone with an officer. this officer's medical condition has not changed. it remains critical. but the officer is stable andhe under watchful eye of doctors here at holy cross. this hospital is about two miley rom where this incident all began earlier this afternoon. let's go and show you some video we shot shortly after we arrived on the scene at westfieldll wheaton we're told that officer was investigating a shoplifter when the suspect just suddenly started to run. that officer gave chase and called him backup which arrived immediately. police are telling us the fact that those officers got to the oscene quickly saved officer's life. they noticed that their colleague was struggling, having some sort of medical episode. they jumped ily immediand started rendering aid until an ambulance could arrive and ultimately rush this officer here to holy cross. e're told he was alert and conscious, butagain, he is in critical condition at this moment. we heard fromef the police
