i'm jim axelrod. we begin tonight in france with a story that sound like something out of a hollywood thriller that stars three very we'll american heroes. one is an air force airman, another an army national guards man and a third is a pal from california they were traveling with on a train from anthony amm to paris. that's when the three americans jumped into action. charlie d'agata picks up the story. >> reporter: video that appears to be shot inside the train shows the suspect face down and tied up. you can see a rifle he was carrying and one of the american men who brought him down after seeing a french passenger first confront the gunman, 22-year-old national guardsman alek skarlatos and his two friends moved in. >> i saw a guy entering the train with an a.k. and a handgun, and i just looked over at spencer and said, "let's go, go." and he jumped up, and i followed behind him by about three seconds. >> reporter: u.s. air force airman first class stone tackled the gunman, and skarlatos knocked hi

i'm jim axelrod. at a gas station 26 miles northwest of downtown houston, a sheriff's deputy named darren goforth was shot and killed last night. the sheriff called it a cold-blooded execution, and the district attorney warned against "open warfare declared on law enforcement." tonight, a 30-year-old man named shannon j. miles has been arrestd and charged with capital murder. meg oliver has more. >> reporter: the arrest came less than 24 hours after the shooting. sheriff ron hickman says there was no clear motive. >> our assumption is he was a target because he wore a uniform. >> reporter: police say the atrocious attack happened fridays night under the bright lights of this gas station in houston. sheriff deputy thomas gilliland: >> the male suspect came up behind the deputy and shot the deputy multiple times. the deputy then fell to the ground. the suspect then continued over to him and shot the deputy again multiple times as he laid on the ground. >> reporter: 47-year-old harris county deputy darre

for stockholders, jim axelrod tells us, it has been a week for the the strong. >> rose: tonight, two americans are being called heroes for preventing a mass shooting on a high-speed passenger train heading from amsterdam to paris. jonathan vigliotti is in our london newsroom. jonathan, what you can tell us? >> reporter: charlie, the two passengers who tackled the gunmen were off-duty american service men. the gunman was carrying several weapons in his luggage including a kalishnakov rifle, automatic pistom oland knives. according to veries, the american service men heard the suspect loading his weapon in the bathroom and confronted him when he came out. the suspect has been taken into police custody. both americans suffered injuries. one may have been hit by a bullet. police have identified the suspect as a 26-year-old of moroccanan descent. he was apparently known to intelligence services. france's interior minister praised the two americans calling them extremely brave and that they helped prevent a terrible tragedy. charlie, so far, there is no motive for the attack although terro
