so let's get the latest on irene's path from jim bernard. how does it look? >> looking at the forecast track, it's following the course that was layed out earlier. as we see right now, it continues to parallel the eastern sea board. looks like it will be crossing new york city as a tropical storm early in the morning and then moving to the west of boston and off into canada here. as i get out of the way, the path today with winds of 80 miles per hour. gusts up to 100. still a category one storm and weakening as it comes ashore through the day tomorrow. but still, rain expected. >> all right jim, thank you very much. tonight the edge of irene started hitting new york. mayor michael bloomberg said the time for evacuation is over and everyone should stay inside. many parts of manhattan look like a ghost town. >> in the nation's largest city, it's hard to find anyone on the street. businesses are shattered. subways and buses are shut down and the broadway theaters are closed. a few decided to brave the rain. >> i wanted to take a walk and you know, see what's goi

for more on where hurricane irene is heading now, we are checking in with jim bernard. jim, you just heard his take on it. category 1, you said maybe overkill when you're looking at all the preparations we're seeing? >> well, first time ever new york's been evacuated. of course we'll only know in the fullness of time the extent, but the main concern at this point is the amount of rain they will get. if it moves slowly up the eastern seaboard, it could leave a lot of moisture in its wake and they already have high water tables there, so that could result in a lot of flooding and obviously they are taking all precautions at this time. there you see the forecast track for irene, as right now winds 85 miles per hour, and category 1 storm. some gusts to 115 and copious amounts of rain along the leading edge of that front wall. that will be moving, again, up the eastern seaboard here through the next 24 hours. so time will tell how much rain they get out of this. at this point, looks like it's going to stay about a category 1 storm. >> okay. a little bit of good news. we'll ch

jim axelrod, thank you very much. cbs news hurricane consultant david bernard in miami joining us.nder, where is this headed and how ferocious is the storm at this before? cynic well, i've been still has a little bit of spite loved in it. but let's take a look at the latest information from the hurricane center at. if a 60-mile per hour tropical storm. it's racing away from the tri- state area. it's moving north northeast at 26 miles per hour. here's how it looks on the radar. the heaviest rain, the big flood threat is upstate new york and most of new england. you kind of draw a line right like that. most of the rain is ending and the heavy rain threat is just about over here. these are simply going gusts since midnight. average of 60-mile per hour wind gust in new york city. for a six element city, so far winds gusts up to 47 at boston. those numbers might come up just a little bit more, so going forward i think for the rest of the afternoon it is rainfall in new england that we have to keep the closest eye on. still, there's a coastal flood threat on the east end of long island.
