jim bridenstine is somebody that, everybody wanted that job, his love of space is unparallel, mike spent -- mike pence and myself felt very strongly about jim, we gave him the job and he has surpassed any of our expectations. having rich guys use nasa and pay it back, i like that so we don't have to put up so much money. you have what -- you have been watching a lot of rich guys put up rockets, that goes to our credit and that goes to their credit also, but we like it. we opened up our field. when we took it over their world covered with grass and they were broken, if you look at canada -- if you look at kennedy, if you look down in florida, whatever you want to look, it was not a pretty picture. there were almost, you could say abandoned. now they are in tip top shape and rockets are going up all the time, and we would actually lease rockets from russia and other country, but from russia, to send people out. and we appreciate the whole relationship with russia, but we well be doing it ourselves. we are in a position we haven't been in for many, many years. space, to me, is important for

our newsmakers program, jim bridenstine joining us for this conversation. jeff: to follow up on that. had a successful test flight to the station in march, an accident in april. there has been a lot of criticism about the lack of openness. what is nasa doing to address those concerns? jim: that criticism largely comes from me as well. this is a new era in spaceflight. nasa is a customer. we are in fact a partner at the same time. we are working side-by-side with commercial capability that eventually will have customers that are not nasa. anomaly, there was no communication from the commercial partner for a period time. that can't happen again. i talked to the ceo. americans are investing in this commercial company. we want to make sure we get clarity early. we decided together that following a new procedure if something like this were to happen within a couple hours we will do a press conference. we will give as much information out to the public as soon as possible. this was an uncrewed test. we make these discoveries before we fly with humans. this is an

and speaking of space, i recently took a tour with nasa administrator jim bridenstine, and he showedch instruments being used to detect water on the moon. >> this is the lunar reconnaissance orbiter currently operational around the moon. it has seven different instruments onboard. it's measuring kind of the elevation of the moon and every part of the electromagnetic spectrum and sending all that data, and it's also measuring volatiles, looking for hydrogen, things hike that so they can make assessment as to where the water, ice might be, for example. and it's taking all that data and sending it back to here at the goddard space flight center. and from here it gets distributed out. kristin: i also spoke with him about former president barack obama's impact on the space agency's effort to return to moon and what he remembers about apollo 11. >> i'm the first nasa administrator that was not alive during that achievement. i'll tell you what my generation remembers, what do i remember, the challenger explosion with christa mcauliffe onboard. that's what's emblazoned in my mind, that stunn

recently i had the chance to sit down with stan's boss actually, nasa administrator jim bridenstine and asked him about the trump administration's new plan called artemis. >> why do we call it artemis? if we look at greek mythology we're familiar with apollo, apollo was an amazing program to go to the moon in the 1960's. artemis happens to be in mythology the twin sister of apollo, she, artemis, happens to be the goddess of the moon and we have a highly diverse astronaut core and some are women. the first women going to the moon is she in the astronaut core. >> yes, we have 38 astronaut core and 12 are women. they're highly qualified and anxious. they want to be the one. i have a 11-year-old daughter and i want hadder to see herselves as having every opportunity that i saw myself asking and when we send for the first time in human history women to the moon under the artemis program, i think it resets kind of the history that, you know, in apollo, we had great test pilots and fighter pilots, but there were no opportunities for women in those days. and today is very different. kristin: tr
