weather channel meteorologist jim cantore joins us now from thurman, iowa. jim, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, lester. our tornado an ef-2, winds of 125 miles per hour. but some of the homes as you can see behind me, extensive damage. you can just go down any street here and see homes with damage to shingles or siding. this street this morning when we got here, we couldn't even get down because there was so much tree debris. some 900 volunteers out here today. that's three times the population of this down, doing a tremendous job in cleaning things up. all right, where do we go tonight? let's talk about this. we've still got a massive squall line stretching from minnesota all the way down into western tennessee. minneapolis, st. louis, little rock all under the gun. minneapolis with tornado to yo but we've only had four tornado reports so far. it's all about the heat tomorrow, lester. look at this in the northeast. boston, forecasting a high of 91 degrees. their average? 55. that's a bad thing. we've got the boston marathon tomorrow. 27,000 runners.

we start with meteorologist jim cantore in lincoln, nebraska. jim? >> lester, four tornado watches out right now. two of them, what we call particularly dangerous situations, which means the wording in that suggests that we will have long track tornadoes. the problem with that is those go till after midnight, and they will probably includenyma, manya anaha, all the way down to clamahoity. let me show you from southeastern nebraska. mainly heavy rain about 100 miles to the northwest in norfolk. rainfall two inches an hour here, right through this playground. just like a river in through here. and of course, we also have, which is typical with these supercell thunderstorms is hail. hail up to the size of golf balls and in some cases it accumulated on the streets and almost looked like snow covering the ground. we know it's not because it's severe weather season. in lincoln, we're rain cooled after the rain, but we may still see a tornado threat as we are under that particularly dangerous situation. long night ahead, lester. >> the true danger zone stre

weather channel meteorologist jim cantore is in orchard park, new york tonight. jim, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. we're sitting about 12 miles to the south-southeast of the city sfr in center in buffalo, new york and it's white again where they mowed this lawn here at orchard park and played golf for the last month. look at the crabapples fully in bloom here with beautiful flowers on them. today we didn't get enough snow here to down these trees. that's the good news. the problem is elevation, elevation, elevation. as we get up high, they've had 18 inches of snow in laurel summit, pennsylvania, elevation 2700 feet. it's winter in the east, and the west has really heated up. while snow isn't entirely unusual this time of year in upstate new york, today's alate april storm caught some folks off-guard after the unseasonably warm weather earlier this spring. >> march was beautiful. >> reporter: in southwestern pennsylvania -- >> it caused some schools to be delayed or canceling classes today. >> reporter: some schools canceled classes today amid wor

the weather channel's jim cantore is there. jim, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. yeah, you can see homes like the one behind me here, where a tree fell on the roof and pretty much popped the sides of it, have sustained extensive damage in through here. and that's really as far as eye can see this morning. we're just at sunup as well. a lot of damage, trees, power lines down. the good news is no reports of casualties, just some minor cuts and bruises. great news, indeed, for a tornado where we had about three minutes of warning here, according to the mayor. the sirens went off and they had about three minutes. the good news is, again, this was one of the weaker tornadoes. it didn't stay on the ground very long. but obviously, for this town of about 238 people, lives are turned upside down, and they've got a lot of cleanup to do. curfew picks up in about a half hour. that means residents will be able to get back in here and assess the damage to their homes. power crews about been working all night long and they're hoping to actually get power back in here at least o

reporting in thurman, iowa, jim cantore. back to jim and doreen. >> awful what happened in the midwest. but here the story is temperatures that make it feel like summer time out there. veronica johnson, we going to enjoy this a while longer? >> no. not for much longer at all. this warmth is well out ahead of the weather system and all the way up the coast of boston. they were in the 80s today. we topped out in the upper 80s. 90 degrees at baltimore tying the record there set back in 2002 but 89 degrees at national. reagan national. so a couple degrees away from the record. nonetheless, folks will agree that today was a little on the sticky side and maybe a little too warm too early. the other thing of course that we've been dealing with the pollen. it's almost double what it was last week running at 1228 grains per cubic meter. oak still making up much of that. what we need is some rain around here. that is exactly what we're going to get. a little bit of rain. we'll have to wait for it. i'll tell you when it's going to come

. >>> jim cantore is in thurmond, iowa, tonight where they estimate about 50% of all the homes in town were heavily damaged by a twister. what caused an outbreak that was so large, we were able to talk about its predict it, friday night's newscast for saturday night? >> two things, brian, instability and wind sheer. when we see those things present it's like a five alarm fire. let me show you with the pieces of debris, what happens. when the wind sheer happens, you create a horizontal roll in the atmosphere, here's the atmosphere rolling like this, the instability allows for the cumulus clouds to roll up. and you end up with this rotating tube in the atmosphere, these big clouds. we don't know exactly what causes the tornado, that was present in a big way. those tubes came down. damage here, extensive in the town of thurmond, iowa. we're talking about winds at 125 miles per hour here. and as we mentioned, 50% of the homes definitely dealing with with heavy damage here. >> how about these high temperatures in the eastern half of the country? >> reporter: that's the instability, it's bee

we have more on the storms from jim cantore. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, as well. you see behind me here, probably the second oldest house in thurman. this was built in the 1800s. obviously a huge loss. the owner buying it from his dad. unlivable. both sides have been blown out with a brick. yesterday there was a massive cleanup effort. there was probably three times the population of a town that came to help with the effort. an awesome sight. let me show you one of 120 tornadoes in the plains states on saturday. storm chasers out. a high-risk day. the second time ever that the storm prediction center in norman ever issued a high risk two days before the event. bigger twisters occurring in rural areas. that said, we lost five people in rural oklahoma, one too many, to be -- five too many, i should say. either way, we're seeing obviously the decreasing storms the past couple of days. the temperatures are probably in the low 40s this morning here. we've got windchills in the upper 20s. monday, back to wo

the weather channel's jim cantore is live in orchard park, outside of buffalo. e things look, jim? >> reporter: well, richard, look like spring has been here. look at how beautiful the grass, is the crab apples behind me here in full bloom. and that's the problem. if we get even three or four inches of wet snow on these branches, very delicate with the new leaf out here, it's going to be a problem. that's what we're really concerned about. once we change over. we think that will be a little bit later this afternoon. everybody's gone to work, on their way to work. everybody's on their way to school. coming home, potentially getting to heavier precipitation, that could be a problem. you see from the radar, buffalo still in the green, if you will. that means it's all rain in through here where we are. not too far from buffalo. we're about 850 feet up, down here in orchard park. in the higher elevations, especially from 1,500 feet on up. over a foot of snow expected, tremendously destructive when you think back at the record heat that we had in march. so that's cause

we want to go to weather channel meteorologist jim cantore on the other side of iowa.ea of humanity. we had the whole park area full of people earlier on. we've got these tree debris piles, if you will, because of literally dozens of volunteers that came on by. you can see the red cross is here as well. the salvation army just walked by. and of course, now that the truck is in my shot, i can't show you the utility pole companies that are up there putting up poles and wires and what not. there's damage just everywhere you can see. there's tarps on roofs, off on the right there, they cleared that house off this morning. that is a livable house, so it's not a destroyed structure. off on the left side, we see a church that's still hanging in there pretty well. shingles ripped off a roof. but a lot of tree damage here. we got a chance to talk to the national weather service, they did say we're probably going to give this one an ef-2 rating, thomas, because we see so much tree damage here. and some roof damage as well. some structures have attained pretty heavy damage and we
