weather channel meteorologist jim cantore is in charleston tonight with the forecast. jim, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, lester. we're here on the east battery where the wind from alberto has whipped up quite a chop out here in the bay. again, the good news is, the storm will continue to weaken and pull offshore, we think, tonight as it heads on off to the northeast. last night ts time we had a strong tropical storm with winds 60 miles per hour. something early obviously that's begun. 130 miles south of charleston, a few rain bands drifting in. rip currents will be the biggest threat. but notice the track taking and keeping it offshore for the memorial day weekend. there aren't going to be any problems with this storm. lester, never before in any year have we seen both the pacific and atlantic have a storm pre-season like this one. either way, though, it doesn't make a match for what is to come this summer. we'll just have to wait and see. back to you. >> jim cantore, thank you. >>> an update on the wildfires burning across seven states. in arizona, more than

nbc's jim cantore is in st. simon's island, georgia, for us. it felt stifling to a lot of the country today. >> yeah, even here with the tropical storm coming through, temperatures got in the mid-80s. that heat wave reminds us more of july 4th weekend. than memorial day weekend. yesterday, in indianapolis, temperatures got so hot, they had to treat 700 people for heat related symptoms yesterday. they were only one degree off the all-time high there in indy at 91 degrees. the heat relentless once again. all these dots represent record highs. some of them all-time across 17 states. look at that. 95 degrees in chicago, the hottest memorial day ever in the history of weather records in the city. and if you remember, not too far back, we had the hottest st. patrick's day in chicago's history back in march. the heat continues tomorrow. potential records. look at this. little rock, 96 degrees. pensacola, 93. thank goodness the gulf of mexico is not too far away. baton rouge to midland, texas, a forecast high of 104 degrees. tropical storm beryl sweepi

our friend meteorologist jim cantore is at the weather channel headquarters with that. hey, jim, good evening. >> three things we're watching for you this weekend. of course, it would be mice if we could take the tropical system and put it over a parched central florida. the biggest thing is the heat. this is going to be with us all weekend. secondly, severe, we're going to ramp up the tornado count, and the tropics. which are just in the formation stages. first the heat, if we get to 95 degrees in indianapolis, that will be the hottest indianapolis 500 ever. you're talk about some 400,000 people out there enduring that heat. on sunday, the trough, which is bringing snow to west yellowstone, lips out and produces tornadoes, we think. minneapolis, omaha, possibly severe weather into chicago as we get into monday. and there's our tropical entity, trying to develop offshore wilmington, north carolina. a lot of models bring this back toward the west. if i show you the suite of models, they show up all these different colors here. that's means unsettled weather for the beache

tropical storm about to make landfall down south, we're joined by weather channel meteorologist jim cantorejim, how is it looking out there? >> reporter: well, lester, after we talked to you this morning, we had a nuisance tropical storm, now you've got something that's potentially a game changer and intensifying to be close to a hurricane, believe it or not. we have a whole new set of problems to expect. dark and ominous skies behind me. that means the storm is coming in. right around midnight we expect landfall. the center of this thing, about 100 miles offshore right now. so it's coming in fast and furious. the weather will, too. we're talking about power outages, very heavy rain in through here. anybody that didn't tie down their boats now have to be racing to do that, as these winds have notched up to 65. they could be 70 or even farther ahead as we go to the next advisory. we've had record highs, about 27 right now. only one degree from the all-time high at indianapolis 500. all this warm weather, everybody wants to get in the water, and that's been very difficult to do. more than 100

that's a great thing. >> jim cantore on the beach for us. thank you so much, jim. >> we want to go back to arlington national cemetery and again, we are waiting for that wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknowns. there you see the crowd has gathered and we have seen some of the soldiers representing the various armed services. obviously at the tomb of the unknowns, that soldier has never been officially named. there are actually six wreaths. you see three on that one side. there are three on each side. they represent the six major campaigns of world war i and again on the back of the tomb, which is facing the amphitheater, here rests in honored glory an american soldier known but to god. there you see the wreath that will be laid by the president today and mrs. obama is with him as well. what do we expect to see? >> it's a very moving moment. we're now behind the amphitheater, where the tomb of the unknown soldiers are. might add, remember the vietnam unknown soldier was finally identified, so he was -- turned up an air force fighter

back to you. >> all right, jim cantore. jim, thank you very much. >>> let's turn now to the weather channel's crystal egger who is tracking the heat wave and subtropical storm beryl as well. >> good morning. there's so much weather to talk about obviously for the holiday weekend. a full-blown heat wave making it feel more like the fourth of july in so many cities from the south through the ohio valley. look at these temperatures. this is 20 to 25 degrees above average for this time of year in so many spots. indianapolis, 96 today, 94 tomorrow. of course with the indy 500 under way, expecting one of the hottest races ever. tracking subtropical storm beryl still off the southeast coast and that's where most of the rain bands are right now. eventually moving onshore as we head into the evening hours tonight. the track continues to take it in that westerly direction. notice all of those warnings and watches out across the beaches of northern florida, up into the southeast coast of georgia. wind, rain and an elevated risk of rip

jim cantore joins me from saint simon's island, georgia, where it looks nicer than it was the last time we spoke. give us a sense what we're expecting here today. >> that's the whole story. if you come to me in one hour, i could be getting one of those heavy bands of rain. next hour we could be dry. right now we're in a drying mode which is obviously fine by me. but folks are getting out and enjoying the water. i don't recommend too many people getting here. the tide is starting to come in now. you can see the kite border. he is flying because of the sustained on shore winds at 25 miles per hour. he's got quite a ride going there, going back and forth along the beaches as the kite is obviously catching the wind and thus pulling him along at a pretty fast rate of speed. that's the thrill of all that. a couple surf borders out. the water's a little sloppy right now for surfing. but really, we talked to the emergency manager. he said yim, all in all this island has fared pretty well but we want to keep people off the beaches and that's the key. heck, it's not just here, all the way down to

weather channel meteorologist jim cantore is live on sea island, georgia. with a good day to you, jim, things look nice right now but i know something is heading your way. are you feeling rough surf and winds already? >> oh, absolutely. alex. you're missing a good day on the beach, darling. but i want to share that with you. i'm standing in the middle of a freedermabrasion, because the wind is kicking up the sand. it's pretty nasty. because it's blowing from the northwest, it's blowing the sand back on to the beach. the place is absolutely packed here this weekend. people are getting in the water, even though the dangers of rip currents out there. i asked the emergency manager, are you going to close down the beaches like they did in south carolina. and he said, jim, we don't have the man power to do that. people are swimming at their own risk. we're asking them and you to tell them to stay out of the water. but people are going to do what people are going to do. the waves are rolling in. the good news is we haven't seen too many people out too deep. the tid
