weather channel meteorologist jim cantore is here with us from ridgefield, new jersey, covering the storm. jim, how much do people have to worry next week? >> reporter: well, you can't let your guard down, it could come close enough to have impacts, it may not be huge but could slow the efforts here, these are the same computer models that we used for sandy, the one on the right is the american model, the one on the left, the european model. the one that nailed sandy's forecast as five days out, which is where we are with this storm. both of them developed the low pressure off the east coast and moved northeast, the american model is much farther east, less impact, but the european map shows coastal flooding at high tide, not to mention a chance of heavy rain. right now, brian, along with the cold front we dealt with, the temperatures are the coldest since sandy, dropping into the 30s, possibly the 20s since last night. and as you know, we still have a and as you know, we still have 3 million people without power, chilly nights. >> jim, we just voted we'll take the model on the right that

weather channel meteorologist jim cantore who happens to be in the midst of it in trenton, new jerseyt's always something these days. it's hard to believe this is it going on. >> reporter: yeah, he especiall nine days after i was up here covering a hurricane, of all things, brian, so that is what makes it incredibly interesting. but let's show you this. this continues to break tonight during your broadcast we've seen areas now upgraded to a winter storm warning in southern new york and southwest connecticut including bridgeport, new haven. you can see the radar is just lit up here with snow and within this radar where, of course, the white denotes the snow, heavier bands of snow like you see what's coming down here in trenton. these silver dollar flakes which are start iing to accumulate on the roads. many areas got 6 to 8 inches of snow. they may exceed 10 inches where we have the pink shade of 6 plus. you can't believe the spread of this thing across new jersey. we've had snow accumulating on some of the worst hit parts of the jersey shore today to the tune of 2 to 4 inches of snow

thank you very much, jim cantore, for that report. >>> look. some of the gas going to jim's turnpike station is refined in the new york area and moved by truck. bull but much of the gas that arrives in new york area comes by barge or tanker. sandy's surge closed the harbor, crimping supplies. it's coming back online slowly. we go to kate kelly for that part of the story. good evening, kate. >> reporter: hi, larry. we're looking at new york harbor where things are gradually coming back to life about a week after the coast guard shut this area down. yesterday, however, they opened the port of new york and new jersey to boats for the first time since saturday with a special aim in mind, bringing gasoline and diesel to new york for a much-needed replenishment of empty fuel stations. there was an influx of barges bringing petroleum products in the afternoon, i'm told, followed by additional traffic this morning. the opening of this harbor and today's news of the jones act waiver are steps in the right directions to replenish gas supplies. officials t

the weather channel's jim cantore is in atlanta with the story. what can we expect? >> the storm before it gets to the northeast has to develop first and it will develop across the south. of course, florida is the big deal here. you can see with our developing storm off the carolina coast we're expecting showers. and thunderstorms over florida. plus we may even see a little bit more rain than what we have here across southern virginia, north carolina, especially later on in the day. this is going to make a fast transition up the east coast, as we get in towards wednesday. temperatures won't be incredibly cold in the south. as a matter of fact, 50s, 60s, 70s, whether you're in the rain or not will be even slate. here's the timing on wednesday, getting into more of the storm because really tuesday's issues are going to be virginia and florida in terms of how the weather's going to impact. but florida, of course, will be out of that on wednesday. but virginia, you'll be in this. parts of new jersey. notice here, we will bring all this rain, all the way up into new engla

boy that is hard to watch, katy tur there in seabright, thank you, and let's bring our friend, jim cantoreth the weather channel, jim, after this storm the last thing we dreamed is we would ask you about a next one, but what is setting up right now? >> we have a storm that could impact, no question about that. several days i was at the battery talking to you when the water came up. history was made, this storm, first of all this is not coming through the tropics, this is the storm, it will be energized with the jet stream, causing a lot of impacts such as rain, coastal flooding and possibly snow. first of all, here is tuesday of the it won't just show up on tuesday, wednesday, florida could feel the brunt of it, including the thunderstorms throughout the day. i don't think it will be an issue for virginia, most of the polls will be closed. but here we are into wednesy, the low pressure will track, pretty much up the north carolina coast, and the virginia coast, we'll watch how close it is to the coast, because there will be a band of 50-70 miles an hour winds on the western side of that. a

jim cantore has more for us on this problem. >> hey, tamron. this is what i would call an orderly gas line, even though it's packed, it's orderly he. people are lined up to each pump, and they filled the tanks with tangers that came in here. this is a nice supply of gas here at the vince lombardi truck stop. back towards the west, you can see here this gentleman, this police officer is actually directing traffic coming in from the exit into which line they should get in. as we show you where that line is, it travels all the way back up around to the turnpike. last night we understand this line was all the way out into the turnpike, which creates a dangerous situation there. so this is pretty good. you have about an hour and a half wait to the end of the line so you're able to get gas. there's no limits here on how much to get. they ask everybody to be respectful of everybody else. if you have five five-gallon tanks strapped to your roof, that won't make a lot of people happy. you have 50% of all the gas stations out there that could be giving o

. >>> for more on those awfully long lines and short fuses, the weather channel's jim cantore is at a gas station in ridgefield, new jersey, just west of manhattan. hi, jim. >> reporter: hey, how you doing? this is actually coordinated pretty well. it's just a nice little thing we got going on here off of the turnpike. you can see these cars are waiting in line. what's happening, there is an officer right here pretty much telling everyone which lane to get in. and then they're coming from really the exit. this is about a half-mile long just up in here. you can see them kind of getting in line here. the wait is about an hour and a half. that's about how long people are waiting. unfortunately, we aren't allowed to walk up to them and talk to them in the cars. sunoco has asked us not to do that so we are respecting that so we can keep the live shot out through here. but guys, the scope of this problem is like this. you've got 50% of the gas stations in this area without power. that's the first thing. check them off. another 20% of them are now running out of gas. all right? check that of

the weather channel's jim cantore is live in new jersey. is it getting better? >> reporter: it is. what's not is the temperature. temperatures are dropping to the low 50s, soon to be 40s, then 30s tonight. guys, this is what you call organized chaos. this gentleman right here just told me, he goes i saw you on tv here at the exit off the turnpike and i came down. he goes i just waited 30 minutes. while it may be organized, have you police officers here who are basically funneling in traffic from the exit and telling them which lane to go in. they don't have to think about that. they come in, it's all done, all taken care of. they get in, it is pretty much a free-for-all. you can fill your tank. this is about a half mile long exit. it is filtering in from north and south side of the turnpike. they're moving along as they are instructed by yet another officer to tell them to get in this single line in through here. this is really going about as well as can be expected. we've had two tanker trucks down here. they filled those tanks with gasoline so obviously with this kind of volume h
