it has been so cold out for so long, even jim cantore is indoors.ctually, we took advantage of having him here in new york tonight to have our friend, the weather channel meteorologist be in the studio with us here tonight. what has to happen? you guys are always talking about new patterns. does new warm air have to come in and just stay for a while? >> what we don't see is a big pattern change, all right. but what we do see is something that may influence the spring going forward. today great lakes ice. we're always watching great lakes ice. statistics have been around since 1963. today, great lakes ice, we're always watching the great lakes ice. this is the most ice we've seen late in the season, the statistics go back to 1963. there were only three times that we saw ice more than 90%, let's look at the march and may outlook. which will basically make up ha what we'll all the meteorological spring. look at the cold air. these are very high probabilities of the cold air hanging over the great lakes. you to think the ice is having a big part in that

let's get try to the weather channel meteorologist jim cantore who is in d.c. jim, when -- i guess everyone is asking the same question. when will the break finally last? >> well, first of all, the guy with the shorts is my hero. i've got to be honest. it's mid-20s -- mid-20s and he's wearing shorts and a t-shirt. that's pretty strong. >> the blood that rolls through him is not through me. that's for sure. >> it's really amazing. you look at the pattern going into early april, nothing is changing. we'll stay in this cold bowl of air over the great lakes and eastern part of the country. so could there be another snow event? yes. i feel like in the middle of the groundhog day movie here. i've been to d.c. four times. it's the same thing on the mall. it's accumulate 7.2 inches. our biggest snow since 1999 in the month of march. but notice what's happening in march. especially in these areas right -- pretty much right where the snow is meeting the ground surface. you've actually had radiation absorbed from the 68-degree high saturday. you're asking what's happening

jim cantore has the latest for us from washington, d.c. >> reporter: how about this, winter's just cranking it out here. we've seen our temperature go from 37 degrees down to 17 degrees, so we've dropped 20 degrees since midnight. 20 degrees. of course, if you think about what happened to the roads yesterday around 50, now we refreeze them and you have a solid cake sitting on these road surfaces. cars are moving, because it's pretty flat, but once you start getting on a hill or two, in and around washington and baltimore, it gets ugly. i'll tell you, if we can get this stuff up by about 2:00 this afternoon once this precipitation begins to taper off, we're going to make headway on the roads. tonight again, single digit temperatures. the normal high for the day is 51 degrees in washington. the normal low is 34. we will start tomorrow at 9 and maybe, maybe get to 31 for a high. we won't even touch our normal low temperature tomorrow, so very, very cold there with whatever's melted underneath is going to cause problems. so far looks like we've gotten about three inches, but once again, if you'

weather channel's jim cantore live in d.c. he brings us the latest from there. jim? >> reporter: good morning, david. kind of a nasty one. expecting 3 to 7 inches of snow, we've got an inch and a half on the ground. of course, it continues to come down in earnest. look back and you can hardly see the capitol. i mean it's very, very low in terms of visibility. winds gusting to 35 miles per hour. we went from 37 at midnight to now 21 degrees, which is incredible cold. we'll get down to single digits tonight, possibly record low the storm is impacting a swath from california across the plains and really from just south of new york down through philly and into d.c. probably further. we can wind up in a situation here where some of the heaviest snow totals may be to the south of d.c., which is pretty rare for the month of march where you average 1.3 inches. we'll see 3 to 7 here before all is said and done. most places will see about that. we've got 5 inches in gaithersburg. roads behind me aren't bad. remember, there's no hills here. this is all pretty much straight here

let's go to jim cantore who is live on this rolling dock here outside of chatham.g. is this impressing you? >> oh, my goodness. you hit the nail on the head. if we were 100 miles west and you are absolutely shutting down new york city and boston with 70 miles per hour winds we would probably be about 100 on the cape. you can see the tides coming in. by the way, yesterday, just to give you an idea of what it was like on this water here which is kind of an intercoastal water way out that way is what protects us from the 15 to 25 foot waves out there. this dock rises and falls when you get the tide coming in. horizontal snow caked on to the piling here. caked on in the tune of about three inches here. it is easier to measure it horizontally than it is on the ground. let's go back down the plank here. we are probably looking at about a foot and a half of surge here. typically these docks are built below high tide or above high tide so you wouldn't normally see the water coming up over the top of it. occasionally we get storms like this and you see the water splash. i'm

the weather channel's jim cantore live in d.c. with the latest. porter: simon, unbelievable. the fifth time the federal government has shut down, the last time that happened was 2003, where we had five shutdowns. this doesn't happen that often. this is so far now a storm that brings our total up, season total to 30 inches of snow. last year we had three, all right? so, downtown here in the district, reports coming in, anywhere from 6 to 8 inches of snow. notice along the walkway here, just a little bit of melting going on. remember, it was 68 degrees saturday. so there's a lot of radiation absorbed by the ground and it's regradiating back up to melt the snow. the grassy surfaces on the mall, a solid seven inches on the ground. temperatures holding steady at 26. schools have been closed. faulkier, 16 snow days, incredible. a summer season for some countries in terms of the days off. our vacation, that's incredible amount of days off. they have to make those up toward the end of the year. big issues at airports, reagan and dulles, snow removaling bac
