. >> i got jim cavanaugh.es into the mind of these lone wolf folks here. this is the official tweet warning of the incident from the u.s. capitol police. as you can see, they are responding to the north barrier. they rammed a vehicle into two officers. both officers are injured. all three have been transported to the hospital. jim, in some ways, this incident actually feels very familiar to me when you think about incidents in washington, d.c., subtract january 6th, september 11th. these have actually been the incidents that capitol please -- police have to deal with, an angry person thinking they will come and -- they have had ramming incidents before, an exchange of gunfire before with one incident that i remember with a car not too long ago. i'm sure you are asked this all the time. this seems like not the smartest time to try to attack the capitol since it's so well secured. >> exactly. i totally agree, this is more of a typical type of attack you see at the capitol and the white house. they are magnets fo

joining us now, msnbc terrorism analyst jim cavanaugh. jim, tlts start there with what we just heard, that this does not appear to be terrorism related. what is happening on the ground there at the capitol but elsewhere as well to try to figure out what happened here and what the motive is? >> yeah, chris, there's detectives and agents all over this guy's information, his public information and probably at his home, drawing up a search warrant to go through his home. certainly going through everything in his pockets, his car, his iphone, computers, whatever they were able to seize at the scene. they're going to be talking to family, neighbors, friends. they're going to see who he is and what he's about, what drove him to this. we know from the reporting it's a deliberate attack. it looks like he accelerated the car into you know ford united states police officers -- >> jim, can i interrupt you for just a second. >> sure. >> we are being told i believe that the lockdown has been lifted. that would be in line with what we just heard at the p

jim cavanaugh and jake sherman. and jake was nearby and captured this dramatic video of quite a rare scene. this police helicopter landing on the east front of the capitol during this harrowing day. jim, i want to start from just your law enforcement perspective because we relied on you in so many emergencies when there are live and breaking news and in the hours of the aftermath of what exactly happened in that interaction, the policing mechanisms that were used, your view of just the raw facts of this incident? >> well, just an extremely brave capitol police performing the function to predict the citadel of democracy. they're there at the gate. apparently this car, we don't know if it stopped at all, but it rammed. it hit a couple of officers and then it ran into the steel barricade that high drolically lifts up. a vehicle is not going to penetrate that steel barricade. it will stop a truck. it is designed to stop a truck bomb. you are not going to get passed that. that stays up because the congress and senate is n

and i want to just echo the sadness that has been spoken and what jim cavanaugh said earlier, this capitol police force is a very well regarded police force. those of us who worked on the hill for years know them well. you know the sadness when officer sicknick died and also the officer who died by suicide. there have been so many injuries, 140 some injuries of some of their fellow officers after january 6th. we've seen how violent it was in the video that emerged afterwards during the impeachment trial and subsequently during those hearings that have been held by joint senate and house hearing committees. and the new leadership not yet taken over apparently, but the former head of the d.c. national guard taking over has been nominated to take over the capitol police. but you saw as tom winter just pointed out how quickly they briefed this time after not at all since january 6 on those incidents. it's remarkable also, katy, that in the past after 9/11 when those barriers first came up, barriers that are far lower than what we see, the fencing since january 6th. before then, since 9/11, we
