joining me now is jim cavanaugh, msnbc tourism analyst and retired atf special agent. so, we are getting bits and pieces, as we often do in these early hours, a picture of an alleged gunman, registered republican, but he gave a small donation to a democratic group. other reports say he liked to play chess and video games in high school, he won a math and science prize. so far, investigators say they found no manifesto, they haven't gotten access to his phone. how are they looking for a motive, jim, and what are the chances that they find one? >> i think some of that is a little bit staring us in the face. i don't think it is the politics, you know, democrat, republican, but i don't think that's what this is. we have talked so many times, chris, you and i, over the years, on violent murders and shootings and bombings. we always talk about the motives, greed, power, hate, and escape. and i think the giant rubric over this is power. and the subcategory is infamy. so, i would categorize this guy , not having any further information, just going with what we know, that he is

. >>> i want to turn to law enforcement analyst and retired atf agent, jim cavanaugh. he joins me no. to meet every time there is a horrific shooting like this. this is exceptional. i want to get your initial reaction, is a former president lucky to be alive this morning? >> he is alive by three inches. really, kate, that is all. if the bullet was three inches, even two inches to the right, it would have penetrated his forehead and he would be the seas. he is very, very lucky. it was a day of tragedy for the 30-year-old man who was killed and the other citizen wounded and former president who was wounded. and it was a day of great success for the secret service and a great failure as well. let's talk about oath, the success first. look, the sniper team killed the sniper and had they not killed him, he might have had, a 30 round magazine, he might have been able to continue to pump bullets into the huddle around the former president and killing the secret service. that would go through the secret service huddle and into the present. he could have been pumping rounds int

joining us now, retired atf special agent in charge jim cavanaugh and captain sanders. vice says they have no plans to change security measures for the republican convention, but, obviously, this is a top of mind for really everyone on the ground there, i imagine. do you buy that, that they're not making any changes? >> yeah, i know it is counterintuitive, ana, in light of the trump assassination attempt, but really it is a smart move and the right decision to not change. the reason is, the difference between a national special security event, which i've been involved in some of those, and a rally on a field in butler, pennsylvania, it is the difference between d-day planning and sending a small patrol out into the territory to set up a command post. it is completely a different an animal. this is a $65 million government expense. there will be 5,000 plus law enforcement officers present. they've been planning it for two years. it is an indoor arena. i mean, they have all the security, and they'll have that as secure as any facility could be to have this convention. now,

also here with us, retired atf special agent in charge and msnbc contributor, jim cavanaugh. stephanie, this is an extraordinary interview that you did. it answers a lot of questions we've been hearing from experts, members of congress, from people who were there on that day who felt like they were lucky to have gotten away without being shot themselves. tell us more about what you heard that the officer got hurt after dropping eight feet? what else? >> reporter: it's important to say the secret service has said it's primarily the responsibility of local law enforcement to protect that building. we don't know which agency. there were s.w.a.t. teams. state police forces. we still don't know who was supposed to secure that building. the township said to me, it was not the responsibility of the butler township police department, which is a very small police department, to secure that building but these officers, four of them, who earlier was responsible for escorting to motorcade to the rally, they heard there was someone suspicious on the roof. so they went to the building. cou
