joining me now, house majority whip democratic congressman jim clyburn of south carolina.ou so much for joining us. we really appreciate it. so you've criticized joe manchin for refusing to change or eliminate the filibuster even to pass voting rights legislation. you are scheduled to meet in washington, d.c. what are you going to say to him? >> well, thank you very much for having me. i will remind the senator why the snant came into being. the senate was not always an elective office. it used to be, they used to be sent to washington by the state legislatures. and that was a compromise when they made the senate elective officers, things changed for the senate. so no matter what may be your idea about why the senate came into place, the moment we changed when the people thought a change needed to be made. the same things goes for a filibuster, it was put in place to expand the debate and debate and give you time to bring people around to your point of view. the filibuster was never made, a was not put in place in order to suppress a bill in order to overrun the minority.

. >>> now let's bring in congressman jim clyburn. what is your reaction to what is going on in minneapolis tonight as america awaits the verdict of the chauvin trial? >> well, first of all thank you very much for having me. i am like everybody else, anxiously awaiting this verdict. i do believe that what we saw with our own eyes all over the world, quite frankly, was a lynching taking place. george floyd was lynched. that's just plain and simple. we have got to bring this kind of stuff to an end. in the beginning of that, it could very well be this verdict. and if this verdict comes in as we all hope it will, i think it will begin the ending of a lot of things, including the so-called qualified immunity, because what has happened here, it has become absolute immunity. i can understand police officers being -- having some forms of immunity, but i cannot understand the fact that we cannot accept the notion that there are some police officers who should not be there. i often tell people, i grew up in the parse ninge, and one of the firs

i had a conversation with jim clyburn who works very close to the president. he believes the president can be a unifying force in this. take a look at what he told me. he said this. he said the bully pulpit is more than a bully pulpit. i think the president can help set a tone in the country there's no question in my mind. so congressman cloyburn as well as others can say that in the wake of the verdict, the white house keeping an eye on this. they, again, are concerned this will, you know, certainly deepen the crisis and confidence of police. he wants to handle this much differently in every way than his predecessor did a year ago in the white house, so president biden watching this just as the rhett of the nation is. it certainly could have a huge impact on his presidency. >> i'm sure the white house is watching what seems to be a never-ending spree of mass shootings in the country. how is the white house balancing these priorities? >> they're, of course, happening at the same time. one mass shooting after another after another after another. so the presiden
