. >> reporter: cbs news news spoke with jim davidson.e'd been rescued after spending 48 hours higher up everest at camp 1. chopper was the only way out. >> we knew we were going to have to stay there for a while. all the roads with it we were sort of marooned up there. >> reporter: but the most gripping video is still there. mountaineers captured the moment an avalanche e their camp. the state department says four americans were killed on everest. including dan fredinburg 33-year-old google executive seen here training for the climb. marisa eve girawong a 28-year-old physicians assistant from new jersey and tom taplin shooting a documentary on everest. the government is still deciding whether it will close the mountain. unbelievably according to one expedition doctor there are five teams still waiting for permission to summit mt. every mt. everest. >>> ahead, we'll speak with colorado climber jim davidson still on the mountain. he'll describe the horrors and the difficult rescue efforts. that's ahead on "cbs this morning." >>> early in 3

i spoke with jim davidson, he's climber from fort collin was, colorado.survived the earthquake and the avalanche. >> camp one, 19,800 feet on the glacier. we are safe and hanging tough in here but it is kind of nerve wracking being up here with all these earthquakes and avalanches coming down around us. >> take me back to the moment of the initial quake. what was it like? >> well we had done a tough lime five or six hours up to camp one, got in here had a little food and water and were resting just about noontime and then all of a sudden we heard an avalanche sound off to our left just a couple hundred yards away there's a mile-high wall. we heard the avalanche sound. we started to get ready to scramble out the tent. and before we could gather the rest of our clothes and step outside, the tent started bouncing up and down vertically about six inches and we thought the weight the avalanche, we had nowhere to run. we were surrounded three to four sides. we had to stand there. and pray. >> have you been feeling the aftershocks? >> yes, we have. we felt four

one of those climbers stranded, jim davidson. he is now at base camp. he joins us now on the line.one of the lucky ones who got the chopper ride back down to base camp. you must be relieved. >> yes, thank you. i am relieved. my colleagues and i were stuck at camp one for about 48 hours. organized a whole fleet of helicopters to pull us out two at a time. very stressful waiting. when we got on the chopper, it was a heck of a ride back down to base camp. quite relieved to be back down here at base camp. >> some people may not understand why only two people at a time in a chopper at such high altitude. >> we were at 19,800 feet. as a result the air is less than half as thick at sea level. the chopper has to work more than twice as hard to lift and also has to have extra power in reserve and the mountains, the winds are always changing. literally they would bring in a fairly full-sized helicopter. we had to bring about half our gear behind. there are no seat belts. there are no seats. you just crawl in, it's a very quick process. the idea is keep the chopper on the ground only about 20
