jim dierck is a principle, but not only a principle and an educator. he is someone who designd and developed innovative concepts where there was an incident that involved safety. for the work he was recognized at the national principle of the year. and he is somebody who is on the ground and has worked to empower young people at his school. he took his school from a different circumstances to be one of the highest performs school districts in the state. jim dierck. margaret brodkin is the director of the department for children youth and families. i emphasize that because it is one of the most critical agencies in the city and county. margaret was a former director the colman advocates who is responsible for many of the children and families here in san francisco much he served as director. including the another and leader of a campaign that results in a children's fund to provides funding to 220 program ares and serves 30 thousand children each year. margaret is a passionate person. she just came back from a trip on around the country and we are very

it's what my colleague, jim dierck, is doing. we need to turn every school into a community school. i had a fabulous opportunity to visit this school. it's for kids who have failed in every way. it's colead by the cb on. they do the counseling. vocational work. the district is the class teaching. they have somebody at their side all the time to help with the needs of the student and the principle and cbo get up and meet every morning. they were total partners in making this a community school. then i will be through. i had the opportunity to go to another school at 9 o'clock at night where i thought it was going to be closed. i walk into the school in upper manhattan and it is lit up like a christmas tree. we have to light up every school. it changed the whole neighborhood. it was a beacon of wonderfulness. it was full of activity. of young people. parents. esl. everything. i got so excited about the potential could be. and it changed the neighborhood and young people. if you want to talk about safety. i think we can make a joint commitment to this philosophy and start making it hap

in fact, jim dierck has that in his school. we want to get it in every single school. >> yeah, i wanted to say, as superintendent mentioned. we do have peer courts. i have sat through the sessions myself. it does seem like it has a better impact. the second thing is coordination. once you have san francisco peer court and into the room. community response. the schools have to have and also the cbo , need to have a stronger partnership. i will give you a very quick example. the court required that the bully stay away from the victim. so what crn did was got to the bottom the conflict. between the victim and the bully's brother. they kept in accordance. however the school district did to the respect or did not follow that mediation and went on and expelled them. they were never mediated. so it's a matter of coordinating the court's with with the cbo mediation. so have you a problem of lack of coordination where you have some great programs but they are not supported by the court. juvenile probation. they do need to work together
