jim frederick is joining us. as i mentioned, the latest development.he president, while he is in asia, making these important phone calls. obviously, wanting the same goal that everyone does at this point. >> yeah. i think the interesting thing so far is how removed the united states has been from the situation, from the negotiations going on in egypt and so people are starting to ask, is this a problem that the united states has to come in and solve? obama has hands-off. he's traveling throughout asia. the united states' voice here has been largely silent. i think part of that is purposeful, and i think part of that is leading from behind some of the strategies the united states has tried to pioneer over the past couple of years, and also i think it's a realization that the united states might not have as much leverage in the region or countries around the region it had a couple of years before the arab spring. >> isn't there great leverage with egypt, you have senator graham and others sends out a warning that money is tied to the progress that egypt

let me bring in "time" magazine international editor jim frederick. jim, we heard the latest details from jim maceda on the ground there. you've got opposition people who are saying even if there's a compromise, unless this decree is completely erased, there will be protests tomorrow, even violent, you heard jim maceda say. >> the heart of this is the constitutional assembly. and the judiciary is a pretty avowed foe of the islamic movement. so the muslim brotherhood has packed the constitutional assembly. what you see now is in if compromise between morsi and the judiciary allows the assembly to continue, there's a lot of anti-islamic opposition who says unless he backs down completely off all of the decreesing we're not going to let it continue. and this is a real conflict. this is a real crisis of this fledging demoxie democracy. nobody really seems willing do that. >> how much of a problem is this for the u.s. in that the cease-fire with israel and gaza, this man was the lynchpin in all of that, and does that have anything to do with his timing in t

joining me is jim frederick and karen. jim, is the u.n.dor up to her eyeballs in the benghazi debacle, as lindsay graham would put it? >> no. >> is she up to her toe nails? is she in it at all? >> she had nothing to do with this. if there was any judgment error involved, there is a question of why was she on the morning programs talking about something that wasn't really in her lane. a lot of the things that she has been described as saying that, this was a spontaneous uprising, if you go back and look at what she said, she didn't actually say that. she said the spontaneous uprising was used as a cover for a concerted attack. a lot of the things that are being put into her mouth she didn't actually say but it's interesting this is being used as a political scalp by the republicans who woont ant somebody to blame for benghazi. it's unfortunate that susan rice, who is a qualified secretary of state candidate would be held out, to be pilloried in this way. it's worth noting the republicans probably don't have enough votes to get in the way of

let's bring in "time" magazine international editor jim frederick. you heard the reports with me. martin fletcher indicating that perhaps not even net uh-hy neta anyone knows what the next phase will be? >> the next 48 hours are critical because the deputy foreign minister basically threatened hamas. you might have a ground offensive. the very important thing to keep our eye on over the next 48 hours is that yippian president morsi is meeting with the prime minister from turkey. they're meeting in cairo. these are two crucial countries. on one hand you have -- they're both large populations. historic allally they're wester friendly. they're anchors between israel and their neighbors. he's probably the most distinguished and elder statementsmen in the region, and morsi is new and democratically elected and trying to make his mark as a statesman himself. it's unclear what kind of pressure they can bring to bear on israel. both would resist getting involved militarily, but unpredictable things can happen. those are the two things to keep our eye out for. >> thousands protested the ga

jim frederick is joining me, international editor of "time" magazi magazine. here we are in to the cease-fire territory. talking 24 hours ago -- >> yeah. >> thinking it was going to happen at that point. but egypt is basically the tent pole in supporting this and sponsoring and overseeing the implementation of this. how much stability is this going to provide to the ongoing talks of trying to have a durable out come? >> i think this is a great first step. the cessation of attacks and if if cease-fire holds, what kind of lasting peace can be built here? because there have been cease-fires in the past and you have this israeli governmental and military phrase of every couple years to go in to gaza and cut the grass. or mow the lawn. or, you know, basically do aerial strikes to try to drive down weapons that are in gaza. >> that's the term, cutting of the grass is the term to go in to take out militants and to take out terrorist arms of hamas. >> yes. the military, the israeli military has been fairly flip about using this phrase and it's a harrowing phrase and p
