jim garner, so many people went through exactly what jim did.to have grandchildren at the school and get them out before the storm hit, the good sense of his daughter and good fortune to do that is difficult to describe. one thing that's happening today, there is this threat of more storms coming through oklahoma, for the most part, that threat is to the south and east of where we are. but the temperature unusually cool today, about 30 degrees lower than it was yesterday, which really, bill, is some good news. because that will keep the threat of more thunderstorms like we saw yesterday developing with that afternoon heat. so we may get some rain today, but maybe out of the woods in terms of severe weather. we'll keep an eye on that throughout the rest of the day. give our best to jim, john. >> reporter: i sure will. bill: amazing he lives in the town and wakes up today and does not know what happened to his neighbors or friends and loved once or the local school and they're finding out through us. martha: no one could say better than jim garner

jim garner said he is not going anywhere. as damaged in the twister and he joins us from moore. jim, how are you doing? >> i'm doing fine. how are you doing today? >> a lot better than what you've been through. i feel for you, what you're going through. you're not up and leaving. why not? >> well, it's my daunt an daughd son-in-law's home and i'm staying with them. you know how disasters seem to bring out the best and the worst in people. i don't want any looters to come around and get all my daughter's stuff, so i'm going to stay in the home. >> what are they doing, jim? >> they're in a motel. my son-in-law's job put them up in a motel so they'd have a place to take the kids and everything. >> speaking of the kids, jim, your daughter was one smart cookie. tell us what she did. >> well, around 2, in between 2 and 2:15 yesterday she saw the thunderstorms popping up on the radar, and so she got up and went and checked the kids out of school early and brought them home. >> as a result, they're alive. >> yes, sir. the school that

the tornado was coming and jim garner and his family knew there was only one place for them to go, the backyard storm shelter. he took us inside. >> this is about what. >> going to say 6 x 6. 6 foot tall. probably 8 foot long, but 6 foot tall, 6 foot wide. >> how many people did you have in here. >> 12 people. >> 12. >> 10 kids, and me and my daughter. >> the hole in the ground was stocked with bottled water, diapers and milk for the youngest grand children, a flashlight, a battery operated tv. there was barely room to breathe. >> show us where people were standing. >> we had kids sitting along the floor, kids sitting on the bench there, my daughter was right here. i was actually setting on the steps holding the door down. >> this is a heavy steel door. jim says it has three locks on it. yet he still during the height of the tornado had to hold this door down with all his might as the storm pulled it. it was all he could do to hold the door in place. >> you could feel the tornado sucking on the door, trying to pull the door up. >> how hard was it to hold that door? >> it was hard. >> t

this fella, jim garner, his daughter and ten children, they all came out of it unscathed. >> bret: that'sreat story, john. thank you very much live in moore, oklahoma. let's bring in now an eyewitness and i a survivor of the storm whose stepson was missing for hours. ken albert joins us on the phone. if you could describe to us what this was like. you said your stepson was missing for some time. >> yes. hello, and thank you for having me. he was actually in briarwood elementary at the time which is another elementary school that was hit. it was just so chaotic and devastating that there was really no communication, and our phones were dead. we had to power, so -- no power, so my husband was down there, walking, running for hours, just trying to find him. luckily he was brought to a safe spot afte afterwards, and he's . that's really all that matters. >> bret: such a great story. we have a picture of him on the screen. just the anxiety of parents trying to reooh night with reun. it's a helpless feeling, i assume. >> it was just pure devastation and all you can think of is really your kids

we haled the live coverage of that tornado as it came through and i talked to a fellow, jim garner who lives a short piece away from here, his house is damaged, he can live in it for the time, it's problem below going to have to come down. he's there with his daughter and son-in-law. his daughter has two children who go to the plaza towers elementary school. it was about 2:00 in the afternoon. she said, you know the weather is getting really bad here i'm not comfortable having the children in that school, she drove to the school which is a little bit less than a half a mile away, picked the children up and took them out of the storm zone in time to get them away from the tornado before it flattened that school, jon. jon: john roberts live in moore, thank you. jenna: just one of many amazing stories we are hearing out of moore today. joining us on the phone now is state representative randy graw. his district is outside where the tornado hit. he has family a fact he egd in the citis affected in the city of moore. we understand your brother-in-law lives in moore and you were just able to
