. >>> jim handly at our live desk now. details of the new report alleging heavy racial bias in ferguson missouri. >> yeah, jim vance, this is a justice department report that hasn't been leelsed yet, but an official familiar with the report revealed today that it documents sweeping patterns of bias not just in ferguson's police department but also by jail and court staff. the report says police used excessive force against african-americans and found that black drivers are stopped and searched far more often than quite drivers, and though they are also less likely to be carrying something illegal. in ferguson courts blacks are 68% less likely to have cases dismissed, 95% of people kept at the city jail for more than two days during a five-month stretch last year were black. the report also found racial bias in e-mails and concluded the justice system favored generating revenue over public safety. the report stems from the shooting death of black teenager michael brown. at the live desk i'm jim handly. >>> there could be a d

jim handly is in our newsroom with that side of the story. jim? >>> doreen mark emmert is the president of the ncaa. he told espn today he is quote, surprised and disappointed by indiana's religious freedom law. krit eks say it can be used to discriminate against gays and lesbians. but indiana governor mike pence says that's not the case and lawmakers are working to clarify language in the law. emmert meanwhile tells espn, "i'm anxiously awaiting whatever clarification the legislature can bring forward to this bill so we can really know what it means and what it doesn't mean." as it becomes better understood we're going to have to sit down and make judgments, it goes on about whether or not it changes the environment for us doing our work and for us holding events. that law is scheduled to take effect in july. in about 15 minutes we'll see how some businesses even another state's governor, are protesting. meanwhile, another group, the flight attendant union, calls on indiana legislature, the legislature there to undo this law, just another one add

jim handly has more with what we learned today. >> nbc news is getting new information tonight from the former head of france's bureau of investigation for aviation. it's their version of the ntsb. he says tonight that the plane was flying very fast at impact, about 435 miles an hour. and he says it's unusual that there was no distress signal sent from the cockpit. the black box that was recovered today has already been sent to paris for analysis. we should have some answers tomorrow morning about that plane's final moments. french president francois hollande and german chancellor angela merkel will visit the crash site tomorrow. meanwhile, grieving families of the victims are gathering tonight in spain and germany. nbc's barry arent has that part of the toir. >> reporter: the flight was traveling from barcelona to dusseldorf. the head of the airline reported after the plane reached cruising altitude it made a descent that took about eight minutes until the crash. relatives of the passengers gathered at the airport waiting for news. 67 germans were on board including 16 high school stud

i'm jim handly. a lot to get to. let's start with disturbing pictures that got national attention, african-american uva student at the hands of avc officers taken down. the governor and the school president for their part launched an immediate investigation. >> i think without the filling, it still would be an issue and still would be investigated. as we know pictures are very powerful. you see this young man down on the ground his face is bloodied i think the governor does the right thing. i don't think he came out too forceful or too judgmental. he said let's have an investigation. the president of the university of virginia is saying the saechlt she's had a tough year with the death of heather graham the "rolling stone" article. i think she's probably seeing she should get out in front of this first and ask for an investigation, but i think the tone so far that the governor and that the president of uva and even maybe the state police are taking are saying we'll take a look at this. >> i think the real issue here
