at the live desk i'm jim handly. >> thank you, jim. the news4 i-team is looking at one of the key factors in the crash, the speed. the train was traveling more than twice the speed limit on that section of track. and there is a system that could have slowed it down before the turn. it's called positive train control. >> positive train control is designed to prevent derailments due to overspeeding. so this is exactly the type of an accident that positive train control should prevent. it's designed to do that. >> congressman dated positive train control after a crash between a freight train and a commuter train in california in 2008. it is used already on part of amtrak's northeast corridor but not in the section of last night's derailment. >> that derailment is hitting close to home for the entire naval academy family tonight. midshipman justin zemser was killed in that crash. he was a rising star at the academy. a wide receiver on the navy football team. a 4.0 grade point average. he was an only child on the way home to new york to see

we've got team coverage on all this starting with jim handly and the latest damage reports. >> reporter: most of the destruction this afternoon and tonight concentrated in oklahoma and kansas. at this hour no injuries or deaths to report. but the devastation is widespread. let's start with the aerials coming in tonight. this new video of damage from areas near and south of oklahoma city. a tornado destroyed at least 35 homes here and the storms were strong enough to prompt the evacuation of the will rogers airport in oklahoma city. and take a look now at this funnel cloud that struck in kansas one of at least nine tornadoes reported across the north central part of that state. but most of those twisters missed heavily populated areas. it is already a tough season for folks there. this area that stretches across part of the country known as tornado alley. the deadly line of storms that killed two dozen people, including school children and moore, oklahoma hit almost exactly two years ago from today. and we've just gotten this in from grady county. that is southwest of oklahoma city. wher

from the live desk, i'm jim handly, pat and chris back to you. >>> we're also watching showers and stronger storms on the storm team4 radar. >> meteorologist doug kammerer is in the storm center. how will it affect the ride home, doug? >> it depends on where you are. we are continueing to see showers and storms out there. nothing too heavy. we have one severe thunderstorm warning until 3:00 for cullpeper county. that's out of there. one storm making its way to the north, a couple around falkier county. some shower activity through prince george's county, this was moving across the paotomac and just died here. we saw it go through waldorf earlier, now the action in falkier county, culpeper county. heavy rain in southern and falkier county right now, warrenton area, more showers. we'll continue to see a few more develop just like last night, any showers that develop the biggest thing is very heavy rain that will come from there. now, tonight's headlines a little different. continued shot for sure this weekend chblt we have the potential for strong storms. i'll tell you when that is and a chan

. >> and i'm jim handly. we continue to learn more about what may have caused the crash and t >> reporter: a live look from above in philadelphia at the wreckage below. as the ntsb says it has been making some progress again. back here live at the port richmond neighborhood. the ntsb just wrapped up a news conference. here's what we've learned so far. the train was going 106 miles an hour. twice the speed of the speed limit when it hit that curb. the train engineer clearly knew something was wrong and hit the brakes. that's when the train derailed. also the ntsb says this is all coming from the black boxes. it has removed all but two of the trains from the tracks. we just saw within the hour a flatbed truck carrying new tracks to rebuild those tracks on what is the busiest corridor for amtrak in the united states. also again, seven people were killed. more than 200 have been injured. >> we've just learned a maryland man is among the missing. bob is the vice president for sale for echo lab. his son is in phila
