we begin with jim handly. jim, walk us through the latest information. >> reporter: i want to start with a quote from a witness in the moments after the gunfire stopped, that witness from this very field said, we have versus guns, not good odds. we are helpless. it is hard to imagine that any one would target members of congress, playing for a charity baseball event, practicing up for tomorrow night, a game which will still take place. hard to imagine that someone would target them, a nonpartisan event that dates back more than 100 years but that's what happened in this quiet, close knit community in delray here. shortly after 7:00 this morning that's when it all started. that's when police tell us a gunman walked up here to eugene simp sin stadium park. he raised his rifle and started firing. we're spread out across the field and in the dugout alla cross t -- across time. he's from illinois and witnesses and police say when he started shooting him. among those hits, steven scalise, so was matt mika, a lobbyist

jim handly is leading our coverage in alexandria tonight. jim? >> reporter: doreen and wendy, this is a community park where generations of virginians have played, del ray as you both know having grown up in virginia is a community where people take pride in these beautiful row homes. this is a place where young people move so they can start families. there is a playground that i want to show you, over my shoulder if we can zoom in very tight over there. this playground is about 75 yards from where the gunman parked his van, a van that is now been processed by fbi and atf technicians. they've removed a mattress, they've removed clothing. they're trying to gain access to some electrical devices of tha gunman from illinois as well. that's how close that gunman parked to that playground. we talked to fitness instructors who were going to have a class out here today but because of the heat they called it off. even closer proximity, the third base dugout, right behind it that's where he opened fired. this section of alexandria, witnesses say the gunma
